Carol Perkins: Color Me Beautiful It was a program the columnist really likes; and, no, she doesn't work for the company. Next previous Carol Perkins column:Willie Nelson By Carol Perkins Are you a winter or a summer? A spring or an autumn? Is your skin tone warm or cool? You don't know? Then you must find out, or you will never distinguish between the right colors to wear or the wrong. Several decades ago, the Color Me Beautiful program was in vogue. My friends had parties where a consultant with a truckload of make-up and books analyzed each lady and told her exactly what "season" she was and what her clothing and make-up palette should be. If so, we hope you'll drop him a line by email. Reader comments to CM are appreciated, as are emails directly to Mr. Hinman at: charles.hinman@sbcglobal.net By Chuck Hinman Over the years, growing up on a Nebraska farm was a priceless education in "Life" with a capital "L," especially in the spring. After a cold brutal winter, it seemed like an ideal time to start all over again from scratch. Trees were seen slowly putting on new leaves; the ground seemed to be waking up after a long winter's sleep with sprigs of green life here and there. Even farm animal life seemed to be "in" on this "new beginnings thing" with baby things springing up all over the place. Q. on 100 years ago: Where was Sulphur Vale? A question apparently for the ages remains underanswered By Jim The first newsletter from this place of mystery appeared in the Adair County News in early January, 1907 and was followed by only six or seven more letters over the next four years. In the October 5, 1910 News, the Craycraft correspondent made reference to "Sulphur Vale, Adair county, a place more magnificent than the ancient groves of Athens."Was possibly - just possibly - Sulphur Vale the Shangri-La of Adair County? Was possibly Sulphur Vale the Shangri-La of Adair County? If so, perhaps some lucky soul - a weary traveler from the Great Northern Wilderness, mayhaps - will again enter that fabled land. History: The Great Adair County General Store Robbery First in so many things, Adair County and Russell Counties, KY, have not produced (many) world class criminals, as this footnote to history and current events in Windsor demonstrate By Jim The article about the Windsor store being robbed brought to mind the Great Adair County General Store Robbery, ca. 1970. The name of the store in question has long since slipped off the plate of my memory, but I believe it was the one located just west of the Hwy 80/1729 (Sano Rd.) intersection. At any rate, three not-quite genius-level desperadoes from Russell County - James, John, & Roy - took it upon themselves to relieve the store of the day's receipts. Let's see. What could possibly go wrong? Wannabe criminals chose daylight heist option The store was located on what was then the major east-west route through Russell and Adair County, and the aforementioned young wannabe criminals chose, perhaps none too wisely, the daring daylight heist option. And too, their getaway car was hardly a garden variety vehicle. There really weren't too many 1961 Pepto-Bismol pink Rambler station wagons keeping the roads hot in the greater Ozark-Craycraft-Gentry's Mill metroplex. But anyway. So (un)successful was this hair-raising holdup, the culprits made it nearly all the way back to Russell Springs before the long arm of the law swept them up and hauled them off to the Jamestown Graybar Hotel. 2010-04-18 06:43:11 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Local History

Comments on decision to table video camera at jail request Wants hard questions asked of candidates About: Adair Fiscal Court Meeting April 13, 2010 report To ColumbiaMagazine.com: I am writing in response to the Fiscal Court meeting and the decision to table the request to purchase a video camera for the Adair County jail. Almost 3 years ago an Adair County citizen lost his life as a result of injuries he received during an incident that happened in the Adair County jail. There was no video. Why now, after almost 3 years, is there a request for a video camera? Why was this request tabled? Citizens of Adair County, you have a voice: that voice is through voting. We have a very important election coming up in the near future and I encourage each of you to ask hard questions and seek answers from those you plan to support. You have this right, please use it. Voting is a privilege and a responsibility. s/Jelaine Phillips Harlow 2010-04-18 06:09:17 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback
