Poem: When you come to the end of a perfect day

Geniece Marcum, my favorite mother in law, found a yellowed newspaper clipping about some family things which she'd like to share:
A veteran home manager of Michigan, who states most modern housekeepers are "soft and flabby" and that they "rush and flutter about getting nowhere fast," offers the following by the great Anon for the consideration of the domesticians of today:

100 Years Ago:
A Brief History of Russell & Co Through 1910, Part 1

A Time of Great Optimism in Columbia, KY: 'The building towers above all others, and the glass front and the artistic painting make it very attractive. . . It is the largest and most conveniently constructed business house in South Eastern Kentucky and has been built at a great expense. It stands as a monument of honor to the owner and it is the pride of this town.'

The biggest news in the News of March 23, 1910, appeared in a short entry near the bottom of the third column:
"Russell & Co.'s formal opening is now on, and people in droves are flocking to the store. The display in all departments is very attractive. Their many box show cases afford an opportunity of displaying goods to the best advantage. Every body is invited to call to-day and to-morrow, there well be salesmen sufficient to wait upon the throng."

New Mexican Restaurant on Public Square, Columbia, KY

See related, new photo posted after receipt of this letter: Daniel's Mexican Restaurant, 104 Public Square, Columbia, KY

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Just wanted to recommend a possible newsworthy item: Daniel's Mexican Grill has opened on the Square. A new restaurant for the community, paired with the need to revitalize the downtown area, should warrant a mention. I am sure everyone would be interested to know that it is open for business. The renovation to the building has drawn great interest, so I am sure that the actual opening would be equally as important.

Thank You!

Carol Perkins: Affairs to Remember

An analysis of the Tiger Woods confession -Carol Perkins
The next earlier Carol Perkins story: The Teepee

By Carol Perkins

I missed the confession. There was no TV where I was that day, so I didn't hear it. Was I the only American not glued to the TV that Friday morning, waiting to hear what the famous and now infamous, Tiger had to say?

I didn't have to flip through too many channels to find the replay, so I listened twice to make sure I fully understood.

Down these mean streets...

"Down these mean streets. . . ."

In 1950 Raymond Chandler defined the hardboiled detective genre, according to critic Terry D'Aury. "Down these mean streets must go a man who is not himself mean. . . ."

I have just finished reading one of my favorite hardboiled detective writers whose main character is not really a detective like Sam Spade, but who sets out down the mean streets to right wrongs.

Kentucky Color - Call home ET

Bonus nuggets of information in this column: A neologism for ColumbiaMagaizine, sort of-ish never used here before, the real color of Dogwood flowers, and an imaginative look at dogwood buds, and a shocking revelation about dogwood "flowers."

By Billy Joe Fudge
Retired District Forester, Kentucky Division of Forestry

A close-up inspection of Flowering Dogwood buds has titillated my imagination and brought to mind Hollywood's most famous Extra-Terrestrial.

The species name for Flowering Dogwood is florida. For all of you folks out there who understood that Latin was a dead language and did not want to be a party to its resurrection in the hallways of high school, florida is Latin for flowering.

A Kindred Spirit: Personal Heroes - Erma Bombeck

For the next earlier A Kindred Spirit, click on This I Know

By Teresa Bell Kindred
Nanahood.com

During my teen years when I was struggling to figure out who I was and my mother was struggling to keep from strangling me, she often used someone else's words to express her thoughts and feelings. It wasn't uncommon for me to come in at night after being out with my friends and find either a Bible, or one of Erma Bombeck's articles on my pillow. If it was the Bible the passage she wanted me to read would be clearly marked. If it was Erma's column, "At Wit's End," it was usually clipped neatly out of the paper and placed smack in the center of my pillow.

Night Photography 101:
Techniques, Camera Settings, and Stuff

This is Night Photography 101: 4th Installment: Techniques, Camera Settings, and Stuff
The next earlier installment is Planning a shooting schedule; on location

By John E. Moss
Jamestown, Russell Co., KY

I will always remember my first attempt at a night photography. The excitement and challenge of pulling an image from the clutches of a great darkness. The planning hadn't taken long since I was familiar with the location even to the point of going there during the day and finding a parking spot that could easily be found in the dark. My small camera bag was packed with the essentials and the tripod was in the car waiting. I had even waked up before the alarm clock announced it was time to get at it. A day that was filled with great anticipation and possibler reward had begun.

By The Rev. Joey N. Welsh

I grew up in a family that practiced temperance with regard to alcoholic beverages. The very word temperance is primarily defined as moderation, self-restraint, or the avoiding of excess. Because of my father's job as a manufacturing company executive, my parents had several large parties a year for Dad's co-workers. On those occasions there was a table full of food in the dining room and a well-supplied variety of beverages in the den, including beer and liquor.

Shopping gone wrong

I go on a crazy "lights out" shopping binge every now and then that I can't justify later and yet it seemed so reasonable at the time. Ever been there or done that?

Last week without batting an eye I bought two pair of pricey shoes (I won't tell you the price) reasoning that not one pair of the sixteen pair of shoes on the shoe rack outside my clothes closet door are comfortable. I'm not rich but after 88 years I certainly deserve some decent-fitting shoes. Wsh!
