Billy Joe Fudge poses tough linguistic puzzler

About: Woodpeckertarians say it is Downy not Downey

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

My question is, "are Adairiarian Woodpeckertarians better Woodpeckertarians than non-Adariarian Woodpeckertarians"?

Also and just for your information in the land known as the Great Wooded South, Woodpeckers and Sapsuckers were known as Peckerwoods. I guess it would go without saying then that those of us who hailed from that linguistically unique area of the world would have been known as "Peckerwoodarians."

Woodpeckertarians say it is Downy, not Downey

About: Birds of Kentucky: Downey Woodpecker

Dad:

While I'm sure this bird has been renamed inside the confines of Adair County, as an homage to famous leaders past, in the Sibley's, you will want to look for the dowNY woodpecker, instead.

Best,
s/Pen Waggener

OK, for all the rest of y'all. But inside the borders of Adair County, a lot of us will call it a Downey Peckerwood, or at least a Coybird. We owe that to a past Great Leader. But since Adair County is a nationally respected bird center, CM will yield and change the heading on this picture and the others as found. -Dad

More information on Gentry's Mill

About: 1897 Map of Adair Co KY sparks interest in Gentrys Mill

Larry Foster Jr writes:
For the ad about Gentrys Mill Road, I live on Gentrys Mill Road and my family has lived on this road for over 100 years. if interested I can show this person where some of the old logs are still in the creek bed from the old mill, hope this helps. If you come off Hwy 80 on Chicken Ridge, when you get on the bridge the mill would have been up the creek to your right and some of the old logs can still be seen.

Remembers brother, who died in service, and his stand on flags

About: Flag displayed near LBN Parkway needs attention

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I totally agree on this. I lost a brother back in 1981 and he was so against a shredded flag. He was in the Air Force and lost his life doing what he loved best and that was standing strong for his country. So I hope that someone sees the flag and changes it very soon, not for me, but for all the great fallen soldiers who fought for our freedom and the ones that are still fighting. God bless them all.

Jim uncovers Hooterville newsletter ca. 1964, he says

By "Jim"

After hours of delving into dusty old newspapers and clippings thereof, I found only one reference to Hooterville in a yellowed, undated clipping, possibly - probably - from the early to mid 1960s.

Wonders about status of historic Eubank Springhouse

About: UK Landscape Professor at Homeplace on Green River
Click on headline for complete letter plus accompanying photos of Eubank Spring

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

The photo of the UK professor inspecting a stone fence at the Homeplace on Green River in Taylor County reminded me of Columbia's oldest stone structure, the Springhouse, formerly located at the foot of Jamestown Street.

Is there any interest in restoration?

s/Ann Curtis

To the best of my knowledge, the stones are at the Trabue-Russell House, but funds have not been found to have the historic Eubank Springhouse re-assembled there. A story written in 2005 is at 200+ year-old Eubank Springs springhouse move is underway -EW

Enjoys the daily bird photos

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I can't tell you how much I have enjoyed looking at the bird pictures that are submitted every day. It has made me want to get some bird feeders to attract the birds and take some pictures of my own to share.

s/Marcia Shuffett

Thanks. This area has been blessed with some great bird photographers. We hope you will join them. It's been a lot of fun for most of us. It's a relatively inexpensive hobby, except for those buying $400 purple martin condominiums, but there's no absolute necessity to try to stay up with the Armitages; as we wish more would do. We hope to be able to share your photos in the future. -EW
