Farmers Bank building deserves historic designation

About: Joe Hare photo: Farmers Bank of Cane Valley Building Stairs side

By Ann Curtis

From looking at old photos of the Cane Valley Bank building, it''s apparent that at one time there was an arched window on the front wall of the building that matched the arch of the doorway.

It was such a pretty building. You can see in Joe's photo that lots of the brickwork has been re-done.

Upstairs was at one time the location of the Tampico Masonic Lodge Hall. Joe's description of the tearing out of the vault was amazing! This building built in 1910, according to Randy Flowers' history of Cane Valley, should certainly qualify for historic designation of some kind.

The Cane Valley community newsletter in the May 2, 1906 News proclaimed that

The building committee has been authorized to build a brick building and a meeting of the stockholders will elect their officers next Monday evening. Mr. O.W. McAllister (variously spelled McAllister, McAlister, and McClister), of Shelbyville, will be the cashier."
Two weeks later, the newsletter announced

Thrilled that ACHS still sets academic competition standard

Accolades for the Academic Team Tradition at Adair County High School and great memories shared upon reading Adair Co., KY bursts with pride: 6th FPS, QR Regional academic championships in a row!
Whatever the details of the dim and distant beginnings, it sure brings a smile to my face and a thrill to my heart that Adair is still setting the standard in academic competition. -Chris Rowe

Dear Ed and Pen,

Is that the high school team that's listed as 6 year running regional champions in quick recall and future problem solving? That's fantastic! What an accomplishment!

Copying Fred (Rowe), Russ (Walker) and Shane (Arnold) on this because my memory's not all that quick anymore, but I believe ACHS was also the first ever regional champion in quick recall, back in 1985, which I believe was the year before the Governor's Cup was actually formalized and may have been a regionally initiated effort.

Derek Coomer suggests Adair Co. also embrace ebird.org

To help keep Adair County in the ornithological limelight year round

    Mr. Waggener

Adair County's enthusiasm for the Great Backyard Bird Count and the creation of a Bird Club means this an opportune to make Adair Countians aware of another opportunity for citizen science.

EBird - eBird.org - is very similar to the website for the GBBC. Once you register, you can specify your location and time of your observations, and the number and species of birds seen. But unlike the GBBC, eBird operates year round. You can use it to record birds seen at your feeders, on your property, or anywhere else birds might be. By recording observations from a location on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis you can provide scientists with valuable information, and you can also help keep Adair County in the ornithological limelight.

Adair County already has a handful of e-birders. With help from a few e-birders from outside the county they have already recorded 213 species. This is an excellent start, but the more the merrier. You don't have to be an expert to use eBird. Anyone with a few minutes to spare every week or every month can become a member.

    Derek Coomer
