Chuck Hinman, IJMA 336: Halloween When I Was a Kid

It's Just Me Again 336. Halloween was a family time on the prairie in the 1930's, and each Halloween, one family in the neighborhood would invite the others for a night of scary-spooky fun
Next earlier Chuck Hinman story, Somebody's sitting in my chair Reader comments to CM are appreciated, as are emails directly to Mr. Hinman at: charles.hinman@sbcglobal.net

by Chuck Hinman

Growing up on a farm in the depression days of the 1930's, we were fortunate to live in a neighborhood where families did a lot of things together. Our farm was between Wymore and Liberty (Gage County) in southeast Nebraska.

We had frequent "gang parties" - probably the forerunner of pot-luck suppers. Every Halloween, one of the families invited the "gang" to their place for a scary-spooky evening of fun.

The Metcalfe County Service Unit of the Salvation Army needs help with the upcoming Kettle Drive, the only fund raiser the local unit conducts. Persons are needed to ring the bell at either Dollar General Food Mart or Edmonton Cee Bee on the Fridays and Saturdays between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Could you help? Money collected is used to assist with emergency assistance for needy Metcalfe County Families including burn outs, medical, natural disaster, etc. Most of the money collected in the kettles will be given to Family Resource Centers to assist with buying items for Christmas for needy children. Needless to say, due to economic conditions, their list of children will be longer this year. Call Kettle Drive Chairman Judy Butler at (270) 432-5130 to volunteer. Great opportunity for children to learn about community service! Gaye Shaw, Executive Director, Edmonton-Metcalfe County Chamber of Commerce, Edmonton, KY
