Snoopy, beagle found at Antioch, going to good home

About: Found male beagle; wants owner to call

Ed,

It seems that lost beagles are a hot commodity in Adair County. We got several calls, but none matched this nice little guy. So I loaded him in a crate and put him in the bed of the truck to take to the shelter when one of the road workers on the new KY 61 drove around on his lunch break and stopped to compliment my husband on our place.

Sylvia rescues man whose work is getting him down

Review by Robert Stone

Are you ready for a dog who verbalizes her thinking? On stage for more than an hour?

Sylvia opened at Kentucky Repertory Theatre May 29. In this play A. R. Gurney, probably best known for Love Letters because of the high profile actors who have performed it, explores what can happen when the routine of the everyday world of business is becoming unbearable for a middle age man.

Greg (Robert F. Brock) has been promoted into unhappiness because he likes to be able to connect with what he is selling and now the company wants him to sell financial instruments that mean nothing to him. This detail makes this 1995 play sound rather like it might have been contrived for last year's financial collapse.

Margaret Antle's Just Roses really most special imaginable

"These are not 'Just Roses," They are a young man's special gift to his mother. They are in my mind, the most 'Special Roses' I have ever seen or photographed," -SHAMARIE CLAIBORNE
And on reading the remarkable story Shamarie relates below, you may find yourself totally in agreement. -EW

By Shamarie Claiborne

Recently, ColumbiaMagazine. com received a note from Jim and Ann Goff, in connection to my picture of Margaret Antle's Roses titled "Just Roses". I thought the comment might be a bit personal, so I read it to Margaret and asked if it would be okay to post it.

She quickly agreed and started to explain the day the Goff's were referring to in their note. As the story unfolded I began to have goose bumps myself and by the end I knew those roses were not "just roses" but a special gift from a son to his beloved mother.

Thinks Jamestown, KY, Lakefest for 2009 too good to cancel

Lakefest out at Jamestown KY

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

This event is something that people looked forward to every year. It surely can't be a money issue, because just the beauty pagent alone probably brings in a killing. This is something that people enjoy because you don't have to pay to get into it. People can go and enjoy themselves even if they don't have money to spend. I would like to know the reason behind this because I am very disappointed in this decision. I feel that this should have been a decision made by the town not just a handful of people. We pay taxes too so we should have a say in what goes and what doesn't.s/Nicole Bennett

Record shortfall a challenge; stimulus dollars, cuts help

Legislature back in session Monday, June 15, 2009: Big plus for Adair County: Education funds protected in new state budget. Payments to jails at same levels. But Transportation takes hit as State administration proposes 2009/2010 budget
"I'll say it again and again - we cannot move forward if we take significant steps backward in spending in our classrooms," GOV. STEVEN BESHEAR

From Gov. Steve Beshear's Communications Office

FRANKFORT, KY. - Faced with the largest shortfall in modern Kentucky history, Gov. Steve Beshear unveiled a proposed budget for next year that does not raise taxes on working families and businesses while preserving basic funding for classroom instruction, health care programs for the most vulnerable and key areas of public safety.

Gov. Beshear told reporters Wednesday afternoon, June 3, 2009, that he is formally calling the legislature into a special session, starting June 15, to address a projected $1 billion shortfall in the legislatively enacted budget for the new year, which begins July 1. The coming budget year is also the third consecutive year that the state has had fewer dollars in revenue than projected and budgeted expenses - an unprecedented occurrence.
