Future Breeding, KY, resident knows a lot about raising tobacco

Grew the 'bright stuff'... in 'defining years' growing up in Virginia
About: "Charles Marshburn comments on state of things here"

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

As a matter of fact, I do know a little about tobacco. I worked a tobacco farm in Virginia for two years. Grew the "bright" kind though, picked it one leaf at a time. I respect the farmer after many of my own long hours in the tractor seat. Did some tobacco slide stuff with mules too. In restrospect, those were the defining years of my life. Hard times, good friends, great memories.Yes, Florida is suffering a brain drain. The smart ones are getting out and moving to Kentucky. My wife and I have 24 years each in law enforcement (Sheriff's Deputies). When we are done if Florida wants to find me it better burn down the woods and shift through the ashes.

Remembers Mary Agnes Theatre in Jamestown, KY

About: "The Strand in Jamestown KY. The Star in Russell Springs KY

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

I am 71 years old, and I remember going to the Strand theater in Russell Springs, it was down the street from where the Star is today. I don't think the Strand building is still standing. There was a fire in that block in the past.

The theater in Jamestown, which I remember as well, was called the Mary Agnes.

I'm sure other readers will remember, possibly better than I.

Good photos, I enjoyed seeing them.

Russell Co., KY, historian pinpoints date of Star Theatre photo

See related: The Strand in Jamestown; The Star in Russell Springs" by Kyle Hadley
Jim Garner research pinpoints date of old photograph of 60 year old Star Theater in Russell Springs at between mid-December, 1949, and mid-February, 1950; gives origin of name of "Mary Agnes Theatre" in Jamestown, KY; and adds comment on famed Lake-Trail Drive-In in Mid-town

From Jim Garner

Russell County historian Jim Garner sent the following information gleaned from old newspapers in Russell County, KY:

Plans for a new theatre in Russell Springs were announced in the April 8, 1948 edition of the Russell County News

The article stated the theatre would "be constructed in the center of the business section, where the old post office [and Blue Grill] stood"and noted that the theatre would be built by Mr. A.V. Luttrell, "owner and manager of the Strand Theatre at Russell Springs... Completion of the new theatre will give Mr. Luttrell two theatres in Russell Springs." The article also revealed the name originally picked, the Russell Theatre, and stated that the Russell "seems very appropriate, in honor of our county and the mineral springs in Russell Springs."

Barbara has some really good bargains. including some beautiful Rododendrens of all colors, Knockout roses, weeping mulberry trees, weeping cherry trees, forsythia, and lots of Cleveland pears. SITE NOTE: Tips to expedite postings

CM Needs your help
If your announcement, event, or classified is not posted quickly, it may be because lack of contact information raised a question of authenticity.

If an article expresses an opinion or urges an action, as most benefits, church, and political announcement do, the name of the sender must be included at the end of the announcement.

Otherwise, the contact information is necessary for CM to more quickly make corrections, contact for other information, or otherwise have a need to authenticate.

If a flyer or poster is submitted, and is not advertising, it automatically goes to the bottom of the in-box. To keep ColumbiaMagazine.com's extensive Free Publicity package available, we need to have submissions arrive in the basic format we use (even when the format is a bit quirky; it's designed for today's lifestyle, to quickly deliver information in an easy to understand fashion, to make life in Adair County more enjoyable, with a minimum time allotted to any media.). -CM

Commentary on future of Old Adair Courthouse, Downtown

Writer thinks priority for a revived Downtown Columbia is to make it more Pedestrian Friendly; recalls the horror of seeing an elderly lady killed on the Burkesville Street crosswalk. CM editorial comment follows article.
'Because of the foresight of politicians of both parties, the risk taken by local entrepreneurs, and the patience and diligence of the residents of Adair County and South Central Kentucky; Columbia/Adair County is positioned to lead not follow, achieve not deceive, build not tear down.' BILLY JOE FUDGE

By Billy Joe Fudge

Recently in the Columbia Magazine our community aired some of its thoughts about the Adair County Courthouse and its place in our future. That was a great discussion but I am really concerned about the future viability of Downtown Columbia. With the advent of Holliday Place, the Columbia Bypass, the imminent completion of the new South 61, and the vacating of the Adair County Courthouse; I believe most folks would agree that the dynamics of our Downtown area will be forever changed.

Old Coddger makes plea for natives to be Brothers' Keepers

General obserservation specifically for the "Man on the Tractor Seat," Charles Marshburn, suggests looking out after Incomers until they graduate to being fully, Adair Assimilation Academy certified, born again natives and lose "Half-Back" status.

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

Judging from some of the comments made by some of our recent "Half-Backs" (*see below for definition), I believe some of the natives of Adair County are going to have to be dishing out a lot "larning" to keep the poor souls from "harming" or "starving" themselves.

*Half-Back- A persons from anywhere North of Adair County, who has lived in Florida and has now moved half-way back home, thus "He is "half-back", and found the paradise we have here.

Here's hoping we can pull' em through.

Old Coddger
Nom de plume of a known, kindly but self-perceived curmudgeon, who is a many generations, pioneer stock Adair Countian

OC: Thanks for invoking the Golden Rule concept. There is hope for all the tired, poor and -we take-rich-as-well - huddled masses yearning to breathe free, who reach these parts and see the welcome lamp raised at every golden door to Adair County, KY. Significantly, many, if not a majority, of Adair County public buildings which are named for individuals honor Born Again Adair Countians

For examples of the provocative, thought-provoking Epistles from the Man on a Tractor Seat, enter "Charles Marshburn" in the search box. On a majority of his issues, CM agrees with him. -EW
