Comment on parental burden buying school supply lists

Parent expresses concern about the increasing cost and longer list of school supplies, about the difference in list of supplies from teacher to teacher, and about looks like a shift of costs from the school system to the parents. Still, she has great admiration for educators and thinks they should be paid three times what they get! -CM

I'm not sure if this deserves attention or not, but as a parent of three boys from age 5 - 13, I've noticed that supply lists for some teachers become more extensive each year

ELVIS WILL BE RIGHT HERE Saturday night, August 9, 2008, starting at 6:00pmCT, when Betty Ollestad turns the parking lot of Betty's OK Country Cooking into an outdoor amphitheater for a free concert. The restaurant will present Caleb Brown in Concert with "A Tribute to Elvis Presley." Everyone is encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs," Betty said. "We will be using Anthony's Parking Lot, also," she said. Thatis the large area around the building which can be seen under the big Betty's sign. "I want everyone who can to come out and have some fun with us," she said. "If you liked Elvis, you will really enjoy Caleb. He puts on a really great show!" Caleb Brown, from Liberty, KY, has already enthralled hundreds who have seen him perform at Columbia's Dream Depot and other venues. The restaurant will be open during the concert, with the regular buffet menu, and drinks will be available outside."We've never done this before," she said, "but the more here, the better we'll like it."

Whitney Weddle, Liberty, KY, awarded Scholarship to SCC

2008 Casey High graduate receives Elliott Trust grant
WHITNEY LEANN WEDDLE

By David Cazalet, Jr., SCC Public Affairs Director Whitney Leann Weddle of Liberty in Casey County was awarded a 2008 Elliott Family Trust Scholarship to attend Somerset Community College.

The Casey County Elliott family left an estate in trust to provide Somerset Community College scholarships to Casey County residents. Each year several students will be provided with full tuition scholarships through the Elliott family's generosity.

Weddle graduated from Casey County High School in 2008 with a 3.8 grade point average. She was able to take several duel-credit courses while in high school, which earned her both high school and college credit. Her college GPA was 4.0. She was a member of the BETA Club in high school.

Campbellsville University's Kentucky Heartland Institute on Public Policy will feature discussions on America's fiscal straits, presidential politics and an analysis of the 2008 election during CU's fall semester.

"We have an exciting group of highly intellectual people who will lead the discussions for KHIPP in the fall," said John Chowning, Vice President for Church and External Relations and Executive Assistant to the President, who is the KHIPP founder.

This is why people think Adair County is stupid. I think the signs should be on the right side of road. They sure don'decorate the court house. I have traveled a lot and look to my right for signs, not my left.

    LWC to hold memorial service for student who died in SC

    Funeral arrangements still pending for Daniel Rector, 22. Memorial service will be held after students return to campus, Dr. Luckey says.

    Lindsey Wilson College will hold a memorial service on campus this fall for a student who died early Tuesday morning while on vacation in South Carolina.

    Daniel Rector, 22, of Richmond, KY, fell from a 10th-floor balcony onto a fifth-floor parking deck early in the morning at a Myrtle Beach, S.C., hotel, according to local police.

    Dog causes Columbia cyclist to crash

    POLICE REPORTS

    A Columbia, KY, motorcyclist was injured in an crash just past midnight this morning, at 12:15amET, Wednesday morning, August 6, 2008, on US 127 four miles north of Liberty, KY.

    William R. Vittitoe, 48, Columbia, KY, was operating a 1986 Kawasaki motorcycle, traveling south on US 127, when a dog crossed in front of him, causing him to strike the dog and then lose control o fhte motorcycle.
