Comment on parental burden buying school supply lists Parent expresses concern about the increasing cost and longer list of school supplies, about the difference in list of supplies from teacher to teacher, and about looks like a shift of costs from the school system to the parents. Still, she has great admiration for educators and thinks they should be paid three times what they get! -CM Mr. Waggener, I'm not sure if this deserves attention or not, but as a parent of three boys from age 5 - 13, I've noticed that supply lists for some teachers become more extensive each year I understand that there have been several budget cuts in education, but I'm not sure that parents should be asked to make up the difference. I spent almost $70 today getting the supplies requested on each of my children's lists. I'm not sure where we went from needing paper, pencils, calculators and protractors to needing dry erase markers, colored copy paper, Clorox wipes, gallon zip loc bags, modeling clay, batteries, tissues, hand sanitizer, napkins, and so on. I'm also not sure why some teachers only requested notebooks and folders on their lists and that's all and some teachers had a list longer than my grocery list.I really do appreciate that the budget cuts are hurting our education system and I can say with honest conviction that we have teachers in our school system that I have so much respect for they should be making three times what they do.However, if the budget is cut you have to figure a way to deal with the new budget.I know with the economy the way it is and all the people I know personally who have lost their jobs and are living on a fixed income and trying to re-educate themselves in hopes of establishing a career, we cannot make up the difference in these budget cuts. s/Breanna Bolin This story was posted on 2008-08-06 16:32:23
