Russell Elementary student Megan Tiller grows huge cabbage

2008-08-06 - Shaw-Tiller Road, Russell Springs, KY - Photo By Wanetta Tiller.
MEGAN TILLER, was a third grade student at Russell Springs Elementary School when she and classmates were given a cabbage slip to take home and try to grow the biggest cabbage. Megan said she thought the best place would be in Grand Pa Phillip Tiller's garden. In the fertile Shaw-Tiller Road area of Russell Springs, KY. This is what she grew! That's a lot of coleslaw! A mighty big pot of cabbage soup right there. Megan will be in the 4th Grade at Russell Springs Elementary School this fall. The photo was taken July 10, by Megan's Granny, Wanetta Tiller. Larry Smith Photo from the Past:
Harness racing, 1956, Taylor Co., KY

2008-08-06 - Taylor County Fairgrounds, Campbellsville, KY - Photo From the collection of Larry Smith.
LARRY SMITH, the news anchor at WHVE FM 92.7 radio and Central Kentucky Historian, went to his archives and pulled out this dandy he captioned "Racing at the Taylor County Fairgrounds 1956." It wasn't the Hambletonian, but harness racing was big one-half century ago. This was elegant racing, with the brightly outfitted drivers aboard the sulkies. The fairgrounds was also the site of plug horse races on Saturday nights, not just during the Taylor County Fair. The structures above are now just memories. The gentile sport of horse racing gave way to a rowdier but highly profitable sport in the 1970s, when the track became a premier stock car racing venue, which, Larry Smith says, continued through 1988. The site is now an open field between Auto Smart of Campbellsville and Creekside Restaurant on the New Lebanon Road. "In those days," Smith says, "it was called Spurlington Road. The fairgrounds are owned by the Campbellsville American Legion, he added. To see approximately 100 Larry Smith photographs at ColumbiaMagazine.com, enter his name in the searchbox.
