KSP unveils retro-look cruisers for 60th anniversary

To officially kick off the Kentucky State Police 60th Anniversary Activities, KSP Commissioner Rodney Brewer unveiled 17 limited edition, "retro-look" cruisers Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at the Kentucky State Police Headquarters in Frankfort.

Commisioner Brewer told "The Wave's" Weather/News man and ColumbiaMagazine.com contributer Daniel Wilson that the newly designed cruisers feature the same color scheme and decals used by the agency when it was created in 1948.

The Public Affairs Officer at each post and headquarters will utilize the new vehicles for public functions and recruitment. Brewer says there was virtually no extra expense in creating the retro cruisers and that after one year, they will return to normal service.

This kitty was brought in by a citizen, they said it showed up on their porch. He is a brown tabby, very friendly, neutered and front paw declawed. Since declawed cats shouldnt be outside for lengthy periods, we believe he accidentally got out. We believe he has to belong to someone and as nice as he is, must be missed. • Hears request for $10,000 for CACIDA

  • Receives petition with 19 signatures against Parrot Ave. annexation
  • Councillors Grimsley, Dean, Waggener comments
  • Adjournment tradition intact

By Ed Waggener

The Columbia City Council quickly moved through an eight item routine agenda last night, at its regular Monday, July 7, 2008 meeting, and approved a $32,400 water line for the new Lindsey Wilson College Athletic Complex, and heard a request from Sue Stivers, Executive Director/Recruiter for the Columbia Adair County Industrial Authority, for the City to contribute $10,000 to the 2008-2009 CACIDA budget.

No action was taken at the meeting on the CACIDA request. Ms. Stivers presented a detailed budget, which indicates a marked improvement in costs than had been experienced when the activities were outsourced to a Bowling Green firm.

Agenda: Adair Fiscal Court meeting Tues. July 8, 2008

Fiscal Court has a relative brief 24-item July 8, 2008 agenda tonight at 7:00pmCT, but very important items will be considered, including opening of bids for the electronic control panel at the jail, the announcement of Sheriff Ralph Curry's 2007 tax settlement. Of interest in the financial department, also is the treasurer's report, as the county is now in one of its' lowest receipts seasons.

The court is to consider Judge Ann Melton's appointment of a full time 911 Dispatcher, and Fiscal Court will hear the name of the Ambulance Board Member who will replace member Randy Brown on the three member panel. Mr. Brown has assumed the pastorate of Fairview Separate Baptist Church in Russell County and is a full time Pharmacist with the Westlake Healthcare Team's Casey County Hospital in Liberty.

A request for $10,000 funding for the Columbia-Adair County Industrial Authority, similar to one made last night by Executive Director/Recruiter Sue Stivers to the Columbia City Council, has been postponed until the August 12, 2008, meeting. Approval, pending City Council approval of its equal share, is expected for the new CACIDA.

The complete agenda follows:

The Gifts of Gradyville

There comes a realization that the best "things" to give a child are not things at all.
By Melissa Taylor

I think we, as adults, are often preoccupied with giving to the children in our lives bigger and better "things". We all do it. We all seem to want our children to have all the conveniences that we claim to never have had.

My trip to Gradyville, Kentucky, was an afterthought

A recent trip to Gradyville, Kentucky reminded me of something that we all know--we just sometimes tuck it way back in our mind where it's not as easily accessed, as it should be. That "something" is the realization that the best "things" to give a child are not things at all.

USDA updates price of blackberries daily

Response to Blackberries price needed

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

The USDA Agriculture Marketing Service website updates market prices daily for blackberries sold in several major US cities. Prices range from $6-42 for flats holding 12 containers. Individual containers range in size from 5.6 ounce cups to 1 pint baskets. I' m sure these prices are for commercially grown berries. Considering most of our local berries would be considered organic and all natural grown in the wild, they shoud command a much higher price. Even more so if the hand picked berries have been allowed to vine ripen and been given the time for Japanese beetles and other hungry creatures to enjoy their fair share in a pesticide free and tick infested environment.
