Book Review: Adventures of Slump Thacker by Nancy B. Goff

By Linda Waggener
linda@columbiamagazine.com

If you've been missing the down-home stories of Nancy Goff, former Metcalfe County stylist, song writer, entertainer and story teller, then you'll be delighted to discover that she has written a book, The Adventures of Slump Thacker.

Since she moved from this area back home to Alabama, Nancy has applied herself to organizing her wonderful stories into the book which is for sale in bookstores now.

I enjoyed The Adventures of Slump Thacker on CD, listening to the southern voice of the reader while driving. It is also available in book form.

Letter: Rodney Thompson remembers winning car 50 years ago

A timely note: Adair Co. Fair starts in less than 2 weeks

Ed,

You should remember this. I won the car at the Adair County Fair in 1958. I was 16 years old and of course, walking.

This was something I will never forget.

To win a car at any age is great, but to win one at 16 years old was fabulous.

Amish Buggy Ride photo Album.

Several in sequence photos of the wonderful Amish Buggy Ride conducted by the firm of Andy & Jacob for Proprietor Bill Davenport's 2008 Gradyville Get Together are grouped together following this album folder.

The absolutely delightful tour is one many hope will be offered more frequently on holiday events in Gradyville. With today's sky high gas prices, the entrepreneurs' package fee of $1 per passenger, for the buggy ride, with an entertaining and educational narrative by Andy, was only slightly more than the cost of gasoline on an equivalent ride in an SUV.

The young men had a constant stream of riders.

In 2007, when Bro. Bill Davenport held the first Old Times Remembered reunion day at the Old Sparks Mill, it was a highly successful event.

The mid June timing meant pleasant weather for picnics, touring the restored feed mill, examining the artifacts, and swapping tales.

This year, there was all that, with two hit new attractions. Bro. Davenport negotiated with two Amish entrepreneurs, Andy & Jacob, to carry passengers through Old Gradyville in a horse drawn carriage.

Letter: Proud of efforts in the arts

About: MATT HODGE'S NASHVILLE RECORDING

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

There's always been a part of me that has enjoyed musicals and the arts. I think that it's really amazing that a person from Kentucky is this interested in the arts. It's encouraging that a young man like Matt would sit down and take the time it takes to do something like this. Hopefully for him a career will come from this and he will go on to write many more successful musicals.
