Amish Buggy Ride was a highlight of the Gradyville Get Together To see photo series, "Amish Buggy Ride," Click here By Ed Waggener In 2007, when Bro. Bill Davenport held the first Old Times Remembered reunion day at the Old Sparks Mill, it was a highly successful event. The mid June timing meant pleasant weather for picnics, touring the restored feed mill, examining the artifacts, and swapping tales. This year, there was all that, with two hit new attractions. Bro. Davenport negotiated with two Amish entrepreneurs, Andy & Jacob, to carry passengers through Old Gradyville in a horse drawn carriage. Another was music by the incomparable father son team of Gary Samuell and the younger Samuell, Shawn, who sang a number of Gospel songs and oldies. The elder Samuell's clear tenor rendition of Blueberry Hill, which could be clearly heard through the valley, would make anyone forget Fats Domino himself. It was a great day for everyone. There was media coverage by Gradyville native son Paul Hayes, editor of the Adair Progress and by Sharon Burton, publisher of the crosstown rival Voice Voice newspaper. Charles and Helen Sparks were there from Columbia. Sparks lived in Gradyville for his first years of life. He learned to fish in Big Creek. Learned how to play baseball there. And attended Gradyville School. His stories of Old Gradyville, all true, include the story of going in Mr. Luther Grady's house and finding the great Gradyville horseman dead. Adair Fiscal Court was represented by Fourth District Magistrate Perry Reeder. Yes, there really was a Gradyville High School Elva Gabehart made a hit appearance at the reunion. She is a graduate of Gradyville High School. In 1938. And he had proof that 70 years ago she had attained the honor: her diploma. It read, "Gradyville High School, This Certifies that Eva Berniece Rogers, having complete the Course of Study prescribed by the Board of Education, is hereby declared a Graduate of Gradyville High School and is entitled to this DIPLOMA, given at Gradyville, KEntucky, the eightteenth day of March, One thousand nine hundred and eighty-eight." The diploma was signed by Elia Grant, Chairman of Board of Education; C.W. Marshall, County Superintendent; R.H. Walker, Principal; and Wille Rosenbaum, assistant principal. Two Columbia City Councillors attended, including Gradyville native Joe Moore and Linda Waggener, who has written and organized one of the most extensive collection of stories on the Gradyville Flood in existence anywhere. Many of the Sparks family were in attendance, including Irene Nell Sparks Love and husband Marshall Love, Bowling Green, and Butch Sparks of Russellville, KY. Pops Yoder, one of the earliest Amish settlers in the Gradyville Community, and one of the most beloved Gradyvillians of all time, made an appearance. Joe Parnell appeared in a spiffy tee with his name, a tractor logo, and "Parnell Farm, Jay Bird Ridge," was there to maintain a high level of decorum. Dr. Phil Aaron and son Blake were there. Dr. Phil has long, close ties with the Gradvyille Community. At one time, he established a local outreach clinic from Aaron Medical Center for the community. There were horseshoe games on the large shady grounds. And, through the day, lunches were brought out, with a majority in attendance enjoying the specialties of local barbecue man Johnny Johnson.
