Food, territorial matters may have affected hummingbirds, too

By Tony Harvey

The answer to the question about where the hummingbirds have gone is a little complicated.

As he suggested, the lower temperatures have had a huge effect on their delayed return.

As to why they haven't returned since being seen earlier this spring may also be answered with one simple explanation: The average life span of the Ruby Throats is approximately 4 years and the record is 12 years.

Local effort raised $6,186.55 for Ronald McDonald House

Norma Scott wanted to give back to Ronald McDonald House in Louisville; along the way, obstacles came up, including holding the event on the same day as the playoffs at the ball park, but through it all, she was remind to have faith. She always responded, "I do." And the faith paid off beyond all she had hoped.

By Patricia Hatcher

Slow and steady wins the race. When my sister, Norma Scott, decided she wanted to give back to the Ronald McDonald House in Louisville, she had never put together a benefit, or asked anyone for donations before in her life. She, unlike her baby sister, has always been a little shy!

My sister started out asking our local businesses for donations for the auction, She called me one day upset and very disappointed that so many had turned her down.

Birds of Kentucky: Where did the hummingbirds go?

George Rice, the Egyptian ornithologist on KY 551, the Knifley Road, says he's concerned about his hummingbirds, and wonders if anyone else can help solve the mystery.

"They were here for awhile before the last frost," he says, "then they were gone."

Fellow hummingbird friend Mary Coomer reported 10-12 at her feeders before the cold snap, then none except for one scouter who has been back.

He's hoping others will offer any intelligence on the birds' whereabouts,
