Columbia native Dr. William J. Callison, MD dies in NC

Dr. Callison was member of a prominent, highly respected Columbia family. He brought honor to his hometown through his outstanting achievements in the field of medicine.

One of Adair County's outstanding successes in the field of medicine, Dr. William J. Callison, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon whose medical practice spanned 35 years in Asheville, NC, died Sunday, May 11, 2008. He was 79.

Dr. Callison was born in Columbia, KY, on April 29, 1929, to Frank and Hazel Williams Callison. He grew with with younger brother Jimmy Callison at the family residence in the rock house at the corner of Guardian and South Reed Streets at the foot of Graded Hill in Columbia.



His parents were prominent Columbia business leaders. Mrs. Callison was co-owner of Columbia Cleaners with her brother Jack Williams. Mr. Callison was co-owner of Grissom-Callison Funeral Home, now Grissom-Martin Funeral Home.

As a youth, Dr. Callison attended Columbia Graded School and Columbia High School. He graduated from Western Kentucky University in 1949, and Vanderbilt University Medical School in 1952.

After serving as a Captain in the Medical Corps of the US Air Foce, he returned to Vanderbilt Hospital to complete his general surgery and orthopedic residencies.

Dr. Callison received his certification from the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons in 1962, and served on the staffs of both St. Joseph's Hospital and Memorial Mission Hospital from 1960-1995 as well as being an assistant clinical professor for the University Medical School at the Ashville Veterans Administation Medical Center.

HE was a partner in Blue Ridge Bone & Joint and in 1982, left to begin a solo practice devoted to foot and ankle surgery, which he continued until his retirement in 1995.

He was a member of the Grace Covenant Presbyteerian Church for over 40 years, serving multiple tenures as an elder on its ruling session.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Patricia Lancaster Callison, (also of Columbia, KY), Asheville, NC, and the following:
  • Three children: Anne Callison Stokely and husband Jim of Hamilton, MA; William L. Callison and wife Rhonda of Weaversville, NC; and Frank R. Callisonand wife Janice, Spartanburg, SC
  • His borther: James R. Callison, MD, and wife Barbara, Scottsdale, AZ
  • And seven grandchildren
Memorial services were held on May 15, 2008, at his church with Rev. Mark Ramsey officiating.
