Letter: Welcome home to L. Stephens' grandson LETTERS & FEEDBACK To ColumbiaMagazine.com I too would like to welcome home L. Stephens Grandson back from Irag also. When these young men and women go off to another country to fight for our freedom. It changes them forever. Some come back and they are a stronger person for it, and some come back and they have seen so much horror that they can't cope with their own lives anymore, and then some don't make it back home. We take our freedom for granted, that we can come and go where ever we want, and do whatever we want to. We tend to complain about the littlest of things. Remembering Eula Pyles: A pleasant, happy mother LETTERS & FEEDBACK To the editor, ColumbiaMagazine.com: I enjoy remembering Eula Pyles as a pleasant happy mother who never seemed to be negatively affected by the amount of work and attention required to rear all those little ones. I was a close friend of her daughter, Bernadine Drake, and anytime I was there, Eula was always ready to make us chocolate fudge - the very best I ever tasted. If I happened to be there for breakfast, chocolate gravy was a regular treat. Safe Infants Act allows parents to safely surrender newborns From Commonwealth New Center A state law that allows parents to safely surrender their newborns gives hope to men and women concerned about becoming parents. The Safe Infants Act became effective in April 2002 and allows parents or someone acting on their behalf to anonymously place infants they cannot care for at selected "safe places." The law has resulted in 20 babies being placed in the care of the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS). "We all read the headlines when an infant has been unsafely abandoned, so it's essential people are educated about the Safe Infants Act," said Lisa Durbin, manager of the CHFS Child Safety Branch. "For women who may have lost hope because of a pregnancy, this is an option." Article continues... click title or click here to read whole article. 2008-02-14 08:43:25 | Comments | Printable version

Larry Smith remembers a giant of radio: Tommy Kerr The late announcer was a radio pioneer at WTCO who finished out his career at WGRK, Greensburg, KY, where he tutored a young boy from Summersville, KY With one photo By Larry Smith, WHVE FM 92.7 The WAVE news anchor Tommy Kerr was the longtime morning man on WTCO radio in Campbellsville, KY. Tommy, known as the "Ole Prospector," was famous for his down to earth radio broadcasting style, which easily related to everyone who tuned in his broadcast. A bit on the folksy side, which was exactly what audiences of the day wanted. If we had--and we ought to have--a South Central Kentucky Radio Hall of Fame, he'd be in the top of my list for first inductees.
