SCC President has hair styled by SCC Cosmetology student A look at a vocational opportunity at Somerset Community College, soon to be offered at Albany in Clinton County, KY. With one photo By David J. Cazalet, Jr, SCC Director of Public Affairs Dr. Jo Marshall, the President and CEO of Somerset Community College, demonstrated her confidence in the quality of SCCs Cosmetology Program Wednesday, February 13, 2008, when she had her hair styled by SCC Student Megan Ball. While Ball had provided several manicures for Dr. Marshall, this was the first time Ball had styled Marshalls hair. Ball had previously done a manicure for Dr. Michael McCall, the President of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) during one of McCalls visits to the Somerset Campus. Wednesday was Balls last day in the SCC Cosmetology Program. She is graduating and ready to go to work. Megan is a top student, Jerry Copenhaver, said. He is the Director of the SCC Cosmetology Program. He added, She has excellent grades. Ball, who graduated from McCreary County High School, has been enrolled in the SCC Cosmetology Program since August of 2004. In addition to going to college full-time, Ball has also worked her way through college as a waitress at Lakeside Pizza and Pub. Ball, who has earned a place on the SCC Deans List five times, said she doesnt have many hobbies. School and work are all I have time for, she said. However, Ball is planning to be married on March 29, 2008, to Ricky Lumpkins, a local brick mason. The wedding will take place at Community Baptist Church, where she is an active member. Ball, who is the daughter of Ricky and Beverly Ball of Pine Knot, said that she has always been interested in fashion and hair. She likes cutting hair and doing hair color, like most of the students in the program. She said she also likes doing permanents, which some students do not enjoy doing. She hopes to find a job now that she has graduated with a General Occupational and Technical Degree. Copenhaver said that since SCC expanded the Cosmetology Program, which was originally only available on the London Campus, to Somerset, they have graduated and placed 16 students in jobs locally. Currently, there are 18 students in the program in Somerset. We are planning to expand the program to the SCC Clinton Center in January, 2009, but the proposed 12 percent state budget cut for higher education may mean we will have to delay our plans, Copenhaver said. The SCC Cosmetology Program offers certificates, diplomas and degrees in Cosmetology for students. The difference is that the degree program includes General Education courses like English, mathematics, science, and computer skills. The entire Cosmetology Program takes two years to compete. Copenhaver said that it takes 1,800 clock hours to complete the program. Students attend classes Monday through Friday from 8amET to 3pmET. For more information about the SCC Cosmetology Program, contact Copenhaver at (606) 451-6889 or call toll free (877) 629-9722, ext. 16880.
