Stotts Construction Company Shepherd waterline project underway

George Rice sent two great photographs from the water project pipeline project which is now underway in a big way. The 14" line is part of the system to get water from the Adair County Water Treatment plant at Coburg over to the huge 500,000 gallon water tank at Shepherd on KY 206.

Stotts Construction Company of Columbia, KY is the contractor for the project.

Pipeline promises all the water NE Adair should ever need

2008-01-31 - KY 551 near Egypt, KY - Photo By G.M. Rice. DAVID HARDIN steadies one of the long 14" water pipes into place as Doug Melton operates the trackhoe, gently lowering the pipe into the ground. Once completed the line in place and the new system is fully operable, water will come from the $15 million Adair County Water Treatment plant on Griffith Springs Road just north of Coburg which the project's managers will have ample capacity to mean that Adair County should never be in need of water again. The water line project is part of the Shepherd project which includes the feed from the treatment plant to the nearly completed tower on 206 and which will serve almost one-third of Adair County on the northeast side, from the Knifley area to Pellyton, around to the Sano-White Oak region around East KY 80. Stotts Construction Co., Columbia, KY, is the contractor or the job.

Letter: Thinks quilt barns are great idea

LETTERS & FEEDBACK

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

I was coming from Lexington Tuesday, January 29th and somewhere between Mt. Vernon and Somerset I spotted two quilt patterns on barns. I thought about this being a clever, interesting and inspiring form of art. I had not heard about quilts on barns until today. I think this is a great idea to get travelers to venture into our rural areas.s/Libby Fudge

Controlling food environment at work can be key to better health

By Kelli Bonifer

As New Year weight loss resolutions begin, people can get off track by the temptation of unhealthy foods in the workplace. For people to lose weight and effectively stick to a diet, they often need to change their home surroundings by dumping out the candy dish and replacing it with fruit or replacing soda with water in their refrigerator.

However, many times the food environment at work cannot be controlled. In the workplace, food is everywhere from pastries at morning meetings to the tempting snack drawers and vending machines.

Quilt Barn Trail is closer with great one on US 127 in Russell Co.

The Betty Sue Jasper photo posted today on ColumbiaMagazine.com shows a "Quilt Barn" on US 127 in Russell County, KY. She's hoping to capture all of them. We'd like to help her with the project. The article below is an October 24, 2007, KY Tourism Department story about the Quilt Barn movement in Eastern Kentucky.

By Bob Adams, KY Department of Tourism

Kentucky has long been known as a center for the sewing of colorful quilts in many patterns and designs. But over the past several years, painted quilt patterns on the sides of barns in Kentucky have emerged as a new form of self-expression and cultural pride for rural residents.

Efforts are getting underway to coordinate the painting and erection of colorful wooden quilt blocks on barns in eastern Kentucky and elsewhere to form trails that can lure travelers off of interstate highways onto back roads, bringing tourists into rural areas that need an economic boost.
