Adair Co. Extension Agent report Oct. 20, 2006: Asian ladybugs Many in Adair County are at war, as you read this, with the bugs my mother-in-law calls "Volkswagen bugs." David Herbst sends the most complete information the bugs, which are quite beneficial outside, but whose indoor manners are revolting. Fascinating information about how they came to interior Kentucky through Hickman and how, once they are inside a home, the weapon of choice is a vacuum cleaner. And the cute critters can "bite." Not enough information for a doctorate here, but surely more than enough to become an expert. -Ed Waggener By David Herbst, Adair County Extension Agent for Agriculture ASIAN LADY BEETLE INFESTATON OF STRUCTURES Large numbers of lady beetles (ladybugs) infesting homes and buildings in the United States were first reported in the early 1990s. Ladybugs normally are considered beneficial since they live outdoors and feed on plant pests. Once inside they crawl about on windows, walls, attics, etc., often emitting a noxious odor and yellowish staining fluid before dying.
