Lindsey Wilson students deliver God's Love in NYC We're reach out to the needy, whether they are in Columbia or New York City. We exude this dedication by continuing to do this service project each year with Gods Love We Deliver. - HEATHER DAVIS By Emily Harlan, Lindsey Wilson Staff Writer LINDSEY WILSON STUDENTS ON FALL BREAK HELP NEEDY Lindsey Wilson College students took a break from classes for a week, but student Regina Newton kept learning. Newton is one of seven Lindsey Wilson students and staff members who went to New York City on a service trip over fall break. The group of students and chaperones from the colleges residence life program worked with Gods Love We Deliver, a non-profit organization that cooks and delivers hot meals to terminally ill people who cannot feed themselves. The residence life group delivered more than 30 meals to the terminally ill in Manhattan and Brooklyn. "I got so much from this service project," said Newton, a resident assistant for female freshmen "The love and compassion the people at Gods Love We Deliver put into their work shows me that service is more rewarding than anything else I could do with my life. You cannot do anything without love and compassion for people" Tiffany Hargraves, a graduate assistant in the residence life program, said that helping people with one of lifes basic needs gave her a sense of purpose. "It was such a pleasure to meet all of those people and see how grateful they were for the food they received," Hargraves said. "It made me realize how precious life really is for everyone. I would recommend everyone go on service trips during spring and fall breaks because they are so rewarding. Knowing that I helped someone else was far more rewarding than resting at home on the couch." Phillips Hall Resident Director Heather Davis, who co-supervised the group, said the trip made students realize they can serve others anywhere. "We do not put a bubble around the type of service that is accepted in society," she said. "We reach out to the needy, whether they are in Columbia or New York City. We exude this dedication by continuing to do this service project each year with Gods Love We Deliver." Davis said the sick are not the only ones getting a break from daily life -- students also get a fresh start. "The students put more heart into this work than a lot of the monotonous things they are expected to do in the school year, she said. Service trips give students a breath of fresh air." Resident Assistant Claire Puryear said she felt this new start on her first service trip to New York City. "I got to meet a lot of new people and experience a completely new way of life," she said. "I appreciate home more." Puryear said the group bonded as they helped others. "Since the group was small, we did almost everything together," she said. "I feel a lot closer to the people who went on the trip." The group took some time off work to visit some of New York Citys sites, including the site of the World Trade Centers ground zero.
