David Burris and two fine Asimona trilobae

2006-09-21 - Photo by CM staff.
Other than his family, the Republican Party, the Methodist Church, Jersey cows, and Adair County in general, David Burris is about as passsionate about pawpaws as anything else. The fall delicacies are ripe now. Burris harvested this pair of Kentucky bananas on his Tarter's Chapel place in the Greater Portland area of northeast Adair County. Pawpaws have a taste one loves or hates. Believe it or not, they are now grown commercially, and Kentucky State University in Frankfort has the experts on them. To see some great photos of the beautiful yellow pawpaw flesh and to visit the KSU Pawpaw Information Site Click here. Kentucky State University, according to KSU Pawpaw InformationSite, has "the only full-time pawpaw (Asimina triloba. L. research program in the world."

Feedback: New tombstones for Ambrose Burton and his wives

Thanks sent to Peggy Burton Lawson for raising funds, getting new monuments for grand patriarch of family

All descendants of Ambrose Burton should give Peggy Burton Lawson a big thank you and a pat on the back for getting new tombstones for Ambrose and his two wives.

After seeing that the stones were in bad shape, Peggy started getting the word to Ambrose's many descendants that she wanted to buy new stones. After a few months and some hard work and contributions from her many cousins, her mission has been accomplished.

The old tombstones have been removed and new ones put in.

Thanks Peggy for a great job!Danny Goodin

Feedback: How we can all work together to help others

Hi Ed!

We were so happy to to hear from the Shelton's and Watkin's. We really enjoyed their visit and we are so happy that they had a great experience in our town! Both funeral homes and the court house have been very helpful when we send people to them or call them on the phone.

This is just another example of how we can work together to help others. We love our home town and all its people!

Adair County Public Library

Letter: Visitors find taste of southern hospitality in Columbia, KY

We really got a taste of southern hospitality when we visited Columbia, KY on 8/13/2006. We were looking for our Great Uncle John Henry Franklin's gravesite.

We went to the courthouse and we were sent to the Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home where we met Richard Phelps. He went out of his way to help us.

Today in Columbia: Important meetings. Great time to see Adair

Patchy fog. No court. School Board, Parks & Recreation Board, and P&Z Board of Adjustment meetings this evening. A short KnowYourCountyBetterTour suggested.
If you can find Columbia through the early morning fog, parking should be easier to find and traffic should be lighter; there's no court today, according to the Kentucky Court of Justice information. But watch for school traffic tie-ups.

There are several important meetings today, and it may be difficult to decide which one to attend. The Adair County Board of Education regular September meeting is at 7:00pm, at the same time as the Columbia Parks & Recreation meets in City Hall. Prior to those meetings, at 6:00pm, the Columbia Planning & Zoning Board of Adjustment was to have heard a request to allow a beauty salon at 117 Parkview Drive. NOTE: This P&Z meeting has been cancelled as the applicant, Jimmy Roy, has withdrawn his request for a zoning variance.). All the meetings are open to the public.

For more details and to be reminded of these and other important coming dates and times, click on Events in Quick Links often. Events are updated continuously. Click read more for suggested short trip.
