Dr. Janet Bass Smith to appear in solo piano recital at CU

By Joan C. McKinney, director of university communications

Campbellsville University will present Dr. Janet Bass Smith, adjunct piano faculty at CU and principal keyboardist for the Bowling Green Chamber Orchestra, will present a solo piano recital in the Gheens Recital Hall at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26.

The program, titled All Kinds of Birds, will include piano compositions from the earliest keyboard music to contemporary works. The recital is free and open to the public.

Smith said, Through the years I have played many compositions with birds in the title. Some composers have recorded (either by hand or electronically) the actual songs of birds, while others have written music that is their impression of a particular kind of bird.

I thought it would be interesting to collect some of these into one performance, see a photograph of the bird and hear the actual bird call. I hope the audience enjoys the program as much as Ive enjoyed preparing it.

Smith will show a photo of a bird, play a recording of the actual bird call or sound, and then perform the piano composition related to that bird. Some composers were inspired by a poem about a particular bird, and in those cases, Smith will read the poem associated with the music.

Music of Rameau, Beach, S. Bernstein, MacDowell, Griffes, Messiaen, Ravel and Liszt will be presented.

Smith holds the doctor of musical arts in piano performance from the University of MissouriKansas City, Conservatory of Music, and has masters and bachelors degrees in piano performance from the University of North CarolinaGreensboro and the University of Wyoming.

She has done advanced study at the Juilliard School of Music and the Eastman School of Music.

She has been on the faculty of four different universities and maintains an independent piano studio in Bowling Green, Ky.

In 2003 Smith helped establish the Bowling Green String Academy and was the administrative director for the first two and one-half years. She has been marketing director for the Bowling Green Chamber Orchestra since 2002 and is a past president of the board of directors and principal keyboardist for that orchestra.

While in Missouri, she organized and was president of the local music teachers association. In Kentucky, she has been active in local and state music teachers associations, holding offices in both groups.

In 2000 she was named Kentucky Music Teachers Association (KMTA) Teacher of the Year and received the KMTA Distinguished Service Award. She is a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Pi Kappa Lambda and has received numerous awards for scholarship and performance.

Smith has performed as a solo pianist throughout the United States and Europe, most recently performing a piano concerto with an orchestra in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 2003.

She is a church organist, an amateur cellist, an avid caver and a prize-winning oil painter and poet. In addition, she is a seasonal park ranger at Mammoth Cave National Park.

She and her husband, Charles, a flutist, have performed together for more than 50 years, and have four sons and seven grandchildren.
