The day Sam Walton came to town

As John Ford leads the Columbia-Adair County Airport into a new day, and as Don Franklin, the one man urban renewal agency, Richard Walker, et al, go after a big-time Wal-Mart store, it might be a good occasion to recall the day Sam Walton came to Columbia, as recalled by Steve Parsons, the computer sales department manager here.

The detail we have is that it Mr. Sam was at another store and called the manager at the time, Ricky Rutledge. He was in another town. We're told that Rutledge nearly had a heart attack when the voice on the other end said, "This is Sam Walton, I'll be flying into the Columbia airport," and giving the time, asked, "could someone run out and pick me up"?

Columbia City Council Report September 5, 2006 meeting

Meeting is brief but momentous. P&Z recommendation for zone change on Russell Road approved; makes way for garden center. Compensating tax rate gets first reading. Grants for pool, and from DHS announced. Mayor Bell gives upbeat mini-state of the city report. Labor Day, Wares Fare, President Luckey praised. Joe Moore tradition intact.

By Ed Waggener

In last night's Columbia City Council meeting, a zoning change for the lot east of Dr. Ronnie Rogers office on Russell Road was approved, as recommended by the Columbia Planning & Zoning (P&Z) Commission. The change to C-1 highway commercial opens the way for owner Jason Stotts to open a garden center at the location.

The action was taken following receipt of a letter of recommendation from P&Z Commission Chair Joe Flowers, which included the commission's basis for approving the request. The inclusion of the supporting statement was praised by Councillor June Parson. "This makes it a lot easier for us to understand," she said.

In Downtown Columbia: Very busy today, Sept. 6, 2006

Expect a very busy Wednesday, in foggy, foggy downtown Columbia, KY, this morning. While there are no cases scheduled in Adair Circuit Court, the Kentucky Court of Justice lists 85 cases on the docket for District Court, including hearings for Joey Burris and Lee Burkett growing out of an altercation following the Breeding Doing Donuts incident.( Burkett was involved only in the altercation, and had no involvement with the doing donuts affair.) To see whole docket, Click here or click on Court Docket in Quick Links to access the Kentucky Court of Justice website.

Lots of people will be in town; parking will likely be at a premium. School traffic is moving more smoothly in the second week of school. Chief Mark Harris assigns to Columbia Police Department officers to work traffic each morning at two points on Greensburg ST, and two School Resource Officers (Cops in Schools Officers) help move traffic within the massive Adair County Schools campus. Traffic slowdowns to points as far away as townward of Stults Street and on the north to the Christian Life Center on Hudson Street now seem to be diminishing.
