By Duane Bonifer
Director Public Affairs, Lindsey Wilson College
Tuesday, September 5, 2006, was a busy day at Lindsey Wilson College's Catherine Wilson Center. At noon, Ellen Zornes of Columbia spoke about LEAD Adair County, and then Adair County Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences Kelli Bonifer spoke in the evening about ovarian cancer awareness.

Zornes, who is a graduate of the program, discussed how the leadership-development program has helped Adair County develop "home-grown leaders." The program -- which is an acronym for Leaders Enthusiastic About Developing -- is accepting applications for its 2007 class. For more information about LEAD Adair County, contact Zornes at ezornes@adair.k12.ky.us. or (270) 384-3400.

In her evening presentation, Bonifer talked about what women can do to increase their awareness of ovarian cancer, which is the deadliest of gynecologic cancers and the fifth leading cause of cancer-related deaths among U.S. women.

"These two events are central to the mission of the Catherine Wilson's Center -- to help empower women and to also to lead more healthy lives," said Wendy Benningfield, assistant professor of history and the center's director.
