Not a drop of Bourbon was served

2024-05-19 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
Not a drop of alcohol was served, nor enjoyed, at the Trabue Russell House luncheon last week - it just looked that way because the bottles contained sweet tea. They were great conversation pieces, as evidenced by the smiles on Bridget Compton and Vicky Pike in this picture. The Bourbon bottles on the tables were part of the service designed by hostess Mary Anne Loy who said, "come to the Trabue Russell House now, the roses are blooming!"

Language fun - two words pronounced differently

By Linda Waggener

Two words teased my ears while listening to a podcast recently. The speaker's pronunciation of the following made me smile:

- Medi-te-RARE-ian (speaking about the popular Mediterranean diet), and

- EGG-Zorb (speaking of the body's ability to absorb nutrients).

Phillip Wood Coffey - Dream

Oh, there has been so many sightings of Elvis
Although hear tell he's been gone since August 1977.
But how many of us have seen David Bowie, long gone
Standing on the side of Bramlett Road in their dreams?

There he was, being a country fella - picked him right up.
Said he had fell on hard times - needed a transmission repaired.
Well I said,"don't that beat all, with all that money, needing my help."
Still you be so lowly - an Englishman - driving an old junker like me.

Travel: Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park

2024-05-19 - Utah-Arizona State Line - Photo by Robert Ellis, Robert Ellis Woodworking.
Robert writes, "This Park has a nominal entrance fee, with a 17 mile loop road you can either drive, or pay for a guided tour. We decided on driving ourselves since we had an AWD vehicle. The road is mostly dirt with sparse gravel at times...and it is rough! However, the scenery and views are epic, and worth enduring the 'not so pleasant' roads."

From the website:
Welcome to the Navajo Nation's Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park. You are experiencing one of the most majestic - and most photographed - points on earth. This great valley boasts sandstone masterpieces that tower at heights of 400 to 1,000 feet, framed by scenic clouds casting shadows that graciously roam the desert floor. The angle of the sun accents these graceful formations, providing scenery that is simply spellbinding.

Thanks to community from Reliford family

By LaVerne Reliford

Thank you to everyone who has been so kind to us at Jerry's death.

Our family would like to thank everyone who sent food, donated to our Church, or maybe you sent flowers. So many of you came to Gerald's funeral to show your love and respect. We were overwhelmed at your love and appreciation for his life. Your thoughts and memories of Gerald were healing to our hearts. We especially want to thank Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home for the respect and care they showed to our family.

Again, thank you Adair County and everyone who came.

Go vote - poll open at Courthouse Annex

From Representative Amy Neighbors

America was founded to give all citizens of the nation a voice in the political process. The founders rallied behind the demand of "No taxation without representation" and fought to establish a nation where the voice of the people was paramount. Though our founders disagreed on many aspects of their future nation, one facet of our political system was agreed to by all, in one form or another, and this was the right to vote for those who govern us.

Primary elections (voting underway now) will be held on May 21 - voters need to understand the election process, the intent of these elections, and how to learn more about those competing for their party's nomination. Unlike general elections, primary elections require voters to be registered members of the party they are voting for. This means Republicans vote between Republican candidates, and Democrats vote for Democratic candidates.

Every year Kroger commemorates a prior Derby winner with glasses, mugs, t-shirts, etc. This year the honor goes to a horse named Black Gold who won the Derby exactly 100 years ago.

May is Better Hearing and Speech month

With approximately 700,000 Kentuckians of all ages experiencing some degree of hearing loss, Gov. Andy Beshear and the Kentucky Commission on the Deaf and Hard of Hearing are encouraging people to learn the signs of hearing loss and to seek care during Better Hearing and Speech Month in May.

"Thousands of Kentuckians of all ages are affected by hearing loss, but many do not recognize the signs because it often happens gradually over time from aging, ongoing exposure to loud noises or a variety of other reasons," said Gov. Beshear.
