OP-ED: AmeriCorps and National Service By Joe Bringardner, Executive Director Serve Kentucky In a time when division dominates the headlines, national service offers rare common ground. Across Kentucky, AmeriCorps members are showing up - not for headlines, but for neighbors. They tutor students, support families, and help communities rebuild after disasters. They reflect the values that define the Commonwealth: compassion, grit, and an unwavering commitment to one another. AmeriCorps is not your typical federal agency. It's led by Governors and State Service Commissions - local leaders who understand their communities better than any one-size-fits-all federal blueprint ever could. Federal dollars are matched by local investment, creating a powerful public-private partnership that delivers real results. The results are clear. In 2024, more than 5,200 Kentuckians served at 700+ service sites, supporting schools, food banks, shelters, and disaster relief. That work leveraged $33.7 million in federal funding and generated $8.7 million in local support. Their impact is measurable - and personal: Article continues... click here to read the whole article, or to share, print, or bookmark it. 2025-05-30 09:05:32 | Comments | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback Events scheduled for today, May 30, 2025 All events are listed in Central Time. | Submit your upcoming event using our Contact Form.

LWC Education Program receives national reaccreditation From Duane Bonifer The Lindsey Wilson College education program has received straight A's on its version of a report card. The college's education program has received a seven-year affirmation from the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation, the national body that evaluates and accredits teacher-preparation programs. Lindsey Wilson's education program has been reaccredited without any recommendations. "This is incredible news because the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation accreditation process is very thorough and rigorous," said Lindsey Wilson Education Program Director Jennifer Antoniotti-Neal '98. Antoniotti-Neal said the reaffirmation of national accreditation is also evidence that the Lindsey Wilson education program has "maintained its standard of excellence." Kentucky Color: Twin Maples By Billy Joe Fudge Twin Maples stand sentry over the South side of my home. No they are not identical twins. The near one is a Red Maple and the other is a Sugar Maple. The definition of a sentry is, "a guard, esp., a soldier stationed to prevent unauthorized passage". I stationed these two soldiers 30 years ago with orders to allow direct sunlight during winter to pass onto my house to help my heat pump with heating it. Their orders for summer were to stop direct sunlight from passing onto my house to help my air conditioner cool it. As you can see in the attached photo, they are doing their job spectacularly. However, one of the ramifications of shade is some sun loving grasses like Fescue won't do well in deep shade. Consequently, I recently sowed Blue Grass because it loves the shade. Hopefully, I will soon have a blanket of grass to cover their space. And yes, after these guys matured, I estimate they are saving me near $100 per month on my electric bill the five months of late fall and winter and the four months of late spring and summer. Additionally, they add a value of $15,000 to $30,000 to the value of my home. Carol Perkins: Then There Were Two Previous Column: Sentimental Journey By Carol Perkins Every Memorial Day is a time of remembering. Although my thoughts go to my lost friends every day, this time of the year is especially difficult. There were four of us who were friends from the cradle. One was my first cousin, Roberta, who lived next door. Another was Judy, Roberta's aunt, who was a year younger and was no relation to me, and Connie, who wasn't related to any of us. She didn't know to whom she was related until she was an adult. I wrote her story in A Girl Named Connie. Connie, Roberta, and I spent twelve school years with the same teachers, even in high school. Connie, the tomboy, took Home Economics classes because officials wouldn't let her take her shop classes. She longed for an FFA jacket. We grew up together, walked through adulthood together, and then life happened. Baseball: Indians finish season with 23-11 record By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer Adair County High School Indians Baseball has concluded the season with a final record of 23-11, after a 4-10 loss to the Nelson County Cardinals in the 5th Region Tournament. In that game, the Indians were mainly held back by a poor offensive outing, with the team as a whole combining for just three hits and a batting average of .115 on the game. Sophomores Alex Martin and Jasper Kemp were the only people to post hits for the Tribe, with Martin having a pair to lead the team. Three Indians took the mound, Brayton Coomer, Bryce Russell, and Issac Rodgers. Rodgers got the start and went two innings, giving up three hits, four runs, and walking two batters while being unable to strike out any on 46 pitches. Brayton Coomer contributed three innings of work from the mound, giving up four hits, four runs, walking two batters and striking out three batters on 50 pitches. Bryce Russell did one inning of work pitching, giving up a pair of hits and runs and not walking or striking out any batters on 20 pitches. Overall, the Tribe had a very successful season, reaching the 5th Region Tournament for the first time since 2018. The success of this season is owed in large part to this year's seniors: Brody Brock, Brayton Coomer, Zane Gist, Jagger Kemp, Issac Rodgers, and Aiden Smith, all of which we at Columbia Magazine wish the best in their future. Summer reading list by LWC Arts and Humanities faculty From Duane Bonifer Memorial Day is the unofficial marker of summer, and it's also when many turn their attention to a summer reading list to accompany them on vacation or while enjoying the longer hours of natural light. Members of the Lindsey Wilson College School of Arts and Humanities faculty have assembled a diverse -- and verified -- list of authors and titles they either plan to read or recommend to anyone looking for summer reading recommendations. (Note: Click article title to see the full list) Included in the list are one of this summer's big books, classics that you might have neglected or put off, murder mystery series, novels that were the basis for popular films, and a well-known author's lesser-known work. Regardless, there is more than enough to read long after the final coal in the grill has burned out and all of the fireworks have launched. Event celebrates Montgomery ancestors, Shiloh Christian Church By Mike Watson The Memorial Day weekend was eventful for all, and in various ways. Christa Montgomery Gimbel, whose father was a native of the Joppa community of Adair County, hosted an event that celebrated not only her ancestor, Francis Montgomery, Sr., but also included the 150th anniversary of Shiloh Christian Church. Saturday saw a group of Montgomery descendants and visitors convene at the Trabue-Russell House on Jamestown Street to tour the house and hear its history from curator Mary Ann Loy. Afterward, the group, joined by others, met at the Adair Genealogy & History Research Center for a catered lunch, followed by an excellent program on the Montgomery family from ancient times to the present, presented by Mrs. Gimbel.
