Carol Perkins: Not My Cats Previous Column: Equalizing Christmas By Carol Perkins You know what I want to get my kittens for Christmas? A home. They are not my kittens. They were born under my deck and stayed, along with the mother, the father, and two of their offspring (grown kittens) that followed them to our house, and a visitor. A total of nine cats is at the feeding plate. "STOP feeding them," you might suggest. We can't let them starve. At least two of the kittens are girls, so that's another problem. We have seen stray cats saunter through our neighborhood, but none of them stayed. None had kittens under the deck and claimed us as their "parents." We had a cat years ago, but we vowed never to have another. We didn't ask for them; they found us. So, what do we do? They are so sweet. That's a problem. I have asked some farmers if they need barn cats. They don't. I tried to get my nephew to take two for his kids. "Don't bring any cats to me!" He has a big dog. I put pictures on Facebook, but there were no takers. The black-and-white girl is the most daring. She flies inside every time the door opens, looks around, sits under the tree, and then goes to the door. The gray-and-white girl is cuddly and will sit on my lap and nap while I do. However, she is shy and doesn't offer to run inside. The black ones with white paws and neck are feisty and nosy. Yes, I'm attached, but no, I can't keep them. I don't want to trip over one and break a hip. Guy opens the door, shakes the bag, and they run to the plate every morning and night. Even though he puts food on two plates, they gather (all nine of them) around one, finish it, and move on to the second. I saw fur under the outside tree this morning, and it made me wonder if the older white one had a tussle with a raccoon. "When are you going to get rid of these cats?" Guy asks daily. Suddenly, they are MY cats. I'm hoping someone will reach out and offer to take all or some of them. The next stray cat that shows up won't be as lucky as these. Those are Guy's words. He has a BB gun! Share your thoughts with Carol at carolperkins06@gmail.com, or with CM readers using our Comment Form. This story was posted on 2025-12-10 10:18:35
