Football: LWU defeats Cumberlands 62-13

Davontaye Saunders totaled five touchdowns as the No. 6-ranked Lindsey Wilson football team defeated Cumberlands (KY) 62-13 in a Mid-South Conference matchup Saturday at Parnell Family Stadium.

The Blue Raiders' (6-0, 2-0 MSC) 62 points are the most since November 6, 2021 when they scored 77 against Campbellsville. Lindsey Wilson outgained the Patriots (3-3, 0-2) 436-335 in the victory and held Cumberlands to 146 passing yards. This marks the fourth time this season Lindsey Wilson has surpassed 400 yards of offense. Lindsey Wilson totaled 327 rushing yards and six touchdowns on the ground. This is the second time this season that the Blue Raiders have recorded over 300 rushing yards. The six rushing touchdowns are the most since November 6, 2021 when the Blue Raiders had seven. Defensively, the Blue Raiders recorded three interceptions returning two for touchdowns.

The Blue Raiders next travel to No. 10 Campbellsville for the Battle of Highway 55 at 12:30pmCT on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at Finley Stadium in Cambpellsville.

Kentucky Color: Garrett Creek Road

By Billy Joe Fudge

Garrett Creek Road is alive with Asters. There are white ones and these Blue Forest Asters growing on the wooded roadside (click title to see article with photo). My app identifies them as Drummond's Asters.

They aren't bold or flashy but soft and delicate. So make up your mind to go and see them. They are one of the last feasts for pollinators. Enjoy the ride, the early fall colors and nuances of green between Hwy 61 and the Subtle Community.

Yes, there is a challenging climb up or descent down Garrett Creek Hill which seems to never end. The hill itself is asphalt and might be defined as; almost, maybe, nearly, could be, one single lane. Be prepared to be creative in passing should you meet one of the three or four vehicles a day making the trip "up" to Metcalfe County or "down" to Cumberland County.

Hint: you and the other driver in order to engineer a passing plan, will have to "meet in the middle", since there is nothing but middle, most places on the hill!

Load up the spouse or find a friend and take a ride in the wilds of the Great Wooded South! Enjoy the view and remember, "Art is where you find it!"

LWU Business class offers marketing strategies to Lexington firm

By Duane Bonifer

Lindsey Wilson University alumnus Dustin Beard '07 is an expert in elder law, but the attorney admits that he doesn't know a lot about marketing. That's why Beard recently turned to a Lindsey Wilson business class for ideas on how to expand his law firm, Elder Law Advisors of Lexington, Kentucky.

And Beard received a plethora of suggestions and strategies on Monday, October 6, 2025, when he returned to campus and heard from more than two dozen Lindsey Wilson students from the "Business Policy" class.

The LWU students offered a diverse range of thoughts on how Beard might expand his self-described "niche boutique" law firm. The nearly 3-year-old firm has offices in Lexington and Bowling Green, and it focuses on elder issues such as trusts, estates, probate, Medicaid planning and charitable planning.

"I know elder law, and I would like to grow my firm, but I need help in the area of marketing because I'm not an expert in that area," said Beard, who has been practicing law for more than a decade. "I need to know, 'What does it look like going forward?'"

Operation Crash Reduction kicks off Oct 10

From Marla Marrs

Frankfort, KY - To encourage seat belt use, save lives and prevent serious injuries from traffic crashes, Team Kentucky will join with law enforcement from across the Commonwealth and several northeastern states October 10-13, 2025 to conduct a high-visibility enforcement campaign dubbed Operation Crash Reduction.

"Buckling your seat belt only takes a few seconds, but those seconds can make all the difference in protecting yourself, your loved ones, and everyone on the road," said Gov. Andy Beshear. "It's a simple step that can save your life or prevent serious injury every time you get in a car."

The seat belt enforcement campaign is focused on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Region 3, which includes Delaware, the District of Columbia, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia - a region that sees some of the nation's highest numbers of traffic deaths.

Letter: The retirement question

Comment on Lynda Wilkerson's article October 9 is Ageism Awareness Day

By Richard Raines

I think a lot of well-intentioned people who we may not have seen in a while will ask something to the effect of "Are you retired?" or "When are you going to retire?" not realizing it is not a welcome question to the person they are asking.

As for me, first I've worked jobs that had retirement plans, but I left for a variety reasons (If I had stayed, I would have been headed to a vacation at Our Lady of Peace, I was considered a "liability more than a asset to the company", or the company, or the one that I really enjoyed went broke because of decisions made by upper level management. One job I liked had a retirement account that the owner contributed to, however it was a small business where the owner couldn't afford to pay for employee health insurance and keep the doors of the open.
