Downtown Days: Great weather and busy days in Columbia

Friday will be a very busy day in Downtown Columbia, as preparations for the kickoff of Downtown Days get underway. Offices in the Annex Building will be closed on Friday, and the Square will be closing to traffic at 10amCT. The weather forecast looks ideal, with clear to partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the low-70s to mid-60s through sunset.

You can get an early start on Downtown Days at the Adair County Public Library's Genealogy & History Research Center, which opens at 9amCT, and is hosting a Genealogy Homecoming both days. Mike Watson says, "If you have ties to Adair County and are interested in your family history and genealogy or Kentucky history, this is the perfect opportunity for you to come and meet with people that are interested in sharing their knowledge."

While you're there, view and vote for your favorite entries in the The Downtown Days Photography Contest, to help choose the Public Favorite photo.

Registration for the annual Columbia Baptist Church Corn Hole Tournament opens at 5pmCT.

Friday's events conclude with two free concerts on the Square. First up is The Green River Band, scheduled to take the stage at 6pmCT, followed by the Hank Williams, Jr. tribute band Family Tradition at 7:30pmCT.

For Saturday's all-day schedule, see 2025 Downtown Days Schedule of Events.

Food for squirrels on the ground

I'm always happy for the squirrels when I see acorns on the ground and know they don't have to climb for them. This variety is a mystery to me with the fringe at the top of the acorn. It would make great tiny doll faces for crafting. If a reader has the answer please click 'comment' below and share your knowledge?

Thanks to Billy Joe Fudge we now know this fuzzy topped acorn comes from a Bur Oak tree.
