Carol Perkins: Ladies Day Out

Previous Column: The Homecoming Court

By Carol Perkins

Friday is Ladies' Lunch Day. The number varies from twelve to seventeen, and the locations range from local to out-of-town.

Wherever we go, we are the loudest in the room. However, when the food arrives and the poor server finally gets an answer when she says, "Who got the catfish with green beans and apples?" we stop talking.

Ordering is always worth a submission to America's Funniest Home Videos.

"What did you order?" one of them says to the lady sitting beside her before placing her order.

All-Star Team of future leaders meet at Lindsey Wilson

From Duane Bonifer Some of Kentucky's future leaders gathered July 13-18, 2025, at Lindsey Wilson University to learn how they can help make a better commonwealth.

The 54 rising high school juniors from 37 counties in Eastern and Southern Kentucky were on campus as part of the Rogers Scholars program, the flagship program at the Somerset-based Center for Rural Development.

During their intensive weeklong academic and leadership camp -- which one Scholar equated to being a member of an all-star team -- the students met with state leaders, heard from academic and business leaders, built their leadership skills and served Columbia-Adair County. They also received hands-on instructional training from professional experts in engineering, civic engagement and healthcare.

Friday and Saturday at the Adair County Fair

The Adair County Fair is gearing up for its two big final days - Friday and Saturday, July 18 and 19, 2025 - of pageants and the small car derby.

Mother nature has cooperated as much as possible with spotty, intermittent rains passing over quickly and moving out, allowing for everything to continue as scheduled. Comments to the Fair Association members have been positive for this first full fair in many years, and every night the crowd has gotten a little larger.

Check Columbia Magazine events for times for all the excitement.
