All-Star Team of future leaders meet at Lindsey Wilson From Duane Bonifer Some of Kentucky's future leaders gathered July 13-18, 2025, at Lindsey Wilson University to learn how they can help make a better commonwealth. The 54 rising high school juniors from 37 counties in Eastern and Southern Kentucky were on campus as part of the Rogers Scholars program, the flagship program at the Somerset-based Center for Rural Development. During their intensive weeklong academic and leadership camp -- which one Scholar equated to being a member of an all-star team -- the students met with state leaders, heard from academic and business leaders, built their leadership skills and served Columbia-Adair County. They also received hands-on instructional training from professional experts in engineering, civic engagement and healthcare. KBR riders expected at CACFD mid-day Saturday The Kentucky Brotherhood Ride is held each year to honor Firefighters, Police Officers, EMS Personnel, Corrections Officer, and K9's who have lost their lives in the line of duty. KBR2025 started in Sandy Hook, KY, on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, and has traveled through Elliott, Rowan, Bath, Montgomery, Clark, Fayette, Scott, Franklin, Shelby, Spencer, Bullitt, and Hardin Counties so far. Riders left their Day 3 stop in Elizabethtown on Saturday morning, headed for the Larue County Sheriff's Office. From there, they plan to ride to the Taylor County Fire Department for a lunch stop. KBR representative Geoffrey McNulty says the plan is to leave after lunch and ride down Highway 55 into Adair County, where they hope to reach a planned stop at the Columbia - Adair County Fire Department at 1:15pmCT. The ride will have covered approximately 350 miles, while honoring 19 fallen First Responders from 2024. The final Honor Stop Ceremony of the 2025 ride, scheduled for 3pmCT on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at Russell County Middle School, 2258 S. Hwy. 127, Russell Springs, KY, will honor Deputy Joshua Phipps, who was shot and killed while pursuing a fleeing suspect in Russell Springs on September 16, 2024. Blue Raiders basketball team earns Academic Excellence The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) released its academic award honorees for the 2024-25 season on Thursday, naming the Blue Raider men's basketball team an Academic Excellence Award recipient and seven student-athletes to the Honors Court. The NABC Team Academic Excellence Awards recognize programs that completed the 2024-25 academic year with a team GPA of 3.0 or higher. The NABC Honors Court, meanwhile, includes junior, senior and graduate student men's basketball players who finished the 2024-25 year with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher. The Blue Raider's represented on Honors Court include Chukwudalu Egbejiogu (Media Studies), Connor Robinson (Physical Education and Health), Jackson Edwards (Business), Jeremiah Belton (Interdisciplinary Studies), Johrdon Mumford (Psychophysiology), Julian Cunningham (Business Administration), and Olson Nicholson (Criminal Justice). Each earning their first career Honors Court selection. The NABC's academic awards are presented annually to teams and athletes from all levels of college basketball. This is the Lindsey Wilson men's basketball program's third Academic Excellence honor in the last four years. Boil Water Advisory issued From Columbia/Adair Utilities District Date Issued 7/18/2025, Time Issued 6:30pmCT A Boil Water Advisory is in effect for consumers on James Karnes Road, Cane Valley Mill Road, Pelham Branch Road, Sulphur Springs Road, Old Greenberg Road, Vanhoy Lane, and any sides roads in between. The advisory has been issued due to a main line break. Following such an event, the potential exists for bacteriological contamination of the water supply therefore this Boil Water Advisory has been issued as a precautionary measure. Until further notice, boil all water used for drinking and cooking, bringing the water to a rolling boil for three minutes before using. This advisory will remain in effect until the situation has been corrected and test results have shown the water to be of an acceptable quality. KSP: Investigation leads to a drug trafficking arrest From Trooper Jonathan Houk Russell Springs, KY - On the evening of July 17, 2025, Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post 15 Troopers, in conjunction with local law enforcement, conducted a drug investigation in Russell County, leading to the arrest of an individual for trafficking controlled substances with an approximate street value of $25,000. KSP Troopers conducted a joint investigation with the Russell County Sheriff's Office (RCSO) to attempt to locate a wanted male at a residence on Briar Patch Road in Russell County. Upon arrival in the area, Troopers observed an SUV parked with an open back hatch and several individuals standing around the vehicle. As the Troopers walked by the SUV, they smelled the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. The Troopers observed several bags of suspected marijuana as well as suspected methamphetamine in the back hatch area of the vehicle. Troopers located approximately 2 pounds of suspected methamphetamine and 8 ounces of suspected marijuana. There was also a large sum of cash and drug paraphernalia located during the investigation. This year marked the most significant update to the Floral Hall categories in the competition's history. The major redesign aimed to boost participation, enhance competition, and bring the Floral Hall back to its nostalgic roots. Friday and Saturday at the Adair County Fair The Adair County Fair is gearing up for its two big final days - Friday and Saturday, July 18 and 19, 2025 - of pageants and the small car derby. Mother nature has cooperated as much as possible with spotty, intermittent rains passing over quickly and moving out, allowing for everything to continue as scheduled. Second statewide permit testing event on Aug 2 Due to unforeseen technical circumstances, the Kentucky State Police are postponing today's online registration for the statewide testing event scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 2, until next week. Updates will be provided as they are available. From Sherry Bray Frankfort, KY - Team Kentucky will once again offer a statewide event on Saturday, August 2, 2025, to help interested Kentuckians obtain their permit. Appointments are available to all Kentuckians who are eligible to apply. According to state law, applicants must be at least 15 years of age to apply. Applicants can take the test at any of the 12 counties offered. The Columbia office isn't included in this round, but Bowling Green, Elizabethtown, and Frankfort are. The Kentucky State Police (KSP), which administers state driver testing, will release the appointments on Friday, July 18, 2025, beginning at 1pmCT, through the online scheduling portal at telegov.egov.com/KSP. KYTC: Continued text message scam posing as state agency From Allen Blair Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) warns Kentuckians of continuous reports of fraudulent text messages received by residents impersonating the state agency which features a suspicious link similar to Kentucky government website addresses. The scam messages warn customers of unpaid traffic tickets and say that a "DMV violation" will be reported and "driving privileges" will be suspended if payment is not sent immediately. We are taking appropriate steps to request to have the fraudulent websites taken down. Please take care of the Blessing Boxes From Columbia Mayor Pamela Hoots Someone went to at least one Blessing Box in the city limits and threw out food supplies that had been placed there. This is so discouraging. There are 23 Blessing Boxes in our city and county. The supplies are there for anyone that needs to use them. We appreciate all who help stock these boxes. KELC releases June 2025 Unemployment Report From Mike Clark/Kim Saylor Brannock Frankfort, KY -- Kentucky's seasonally adjusted preliminary June 2025 unemployment rate was 4.9%, according to the Kentucky Center for Statistics (KYSTATS), an agency within the Kentucky Education and Labor Cabinet. The preliminary June 2025 jobless rate was down 0.1 percentage points from May 2025 and down 0.1 percentage points from one year ago. The U.S. seasonally adjusted jobless rate for June 2025 was 4.1%, which was down 0.1 percentage points from May 2025, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
