A bit of Civil War History and a tragedy in 1865

By Mike Watson

One hundred fifty-eight years ago, on 27 April 1865, the Sultana, a side-wheel steam boat carrying 2,427 people, burned and exploded on the Mississippi River near Memphis, Tennessee. As many as 1,800 lost their lives in the disaster. Many were former prisoners of war, returning home. No complete and accurate list of those lost is available as no accurate record of those who were on board survived.

One Adair County soldier was onboard the Sultana, perhaps others. Sgt. Jacob W. Banks, Company A, 3 Kentucky Infantry, US, was aboard the Sultana. Sgt. Banks entered service in September 1861, at age 22 years, was appointed Corporal in May 1862 and Sergeant in October 1862. He was wounded in both legs at Chickamauga in September 1863; captured and in prison at the infamous Andersonville Prison in Georgia. Having survived the hell of Andersonville, he was aboard the Sultana when she sank. He was pulled from the flaming waters and transported to the General Hospital at Memphis where he died on 29 April 1865.

KYTC reminder: Promotional signs prohibited on right-of-way

From Wes Watt

As the warmer weather season moves in and mowing operations pickup, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) wants to remind residents, business operators, and property owners along US and KY routes that any signs placed on right-of-way are prohibited. Election signs, yard sale signs, and real estate signs are just some examples of common signs illegally placed on right-of-way along state routes.

Mowing crews will remove illegally placed signs as they come across them. Some signs create safety hazards for motorists as they can interfere with sight distance. Those signs will be removed as quickly as possible. Any signs taken by the mowing contractor or KYTC crews will be taken to the local county KYTC facility. The signs will be held for a limited amount of time to be reclaimed.

It is also illegal to attach items such as flyers, posters, balloons, or streamers to stop signs, highway markers, or any other road sign or utility pole. Illegal placement on utility poles presents additional obstacles and potential dangers for utility crew workers.

Taylor Co. Board of Education receives $100K grant for Drug Prevention Program

Campbellsville, KY - Taylor County Board of Education was presented with a $100,000 grant award in the Rotunda at the state Capitol on April 27, 2023, from Attorney General Daniel Cameron and the Kentucky Opioid Abatement Advisory Commission.

Taylor County's proposal to create a district wide drug prevention program was one of 24 awardees selected in the Capitol presentation, and the only school. "Our district had already been brainstorming a community coalition approach to better protect students from a variety of negative influences. When this grant opportunity opened, we knew the funding could make our vision a reality; we swung for the fences," said Suzanne Grubesic, District Grant Writer. "Our program, Protect TC!, aims to stop drug use before it begins by addressing the deeper systemic issues (mental health, lack of education, poverty) that make our students and rural community most vulnerable".

Public input is needed to help the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) identify transportation concerns along the U.S. 127 corridor in Casey and Lincoln Counties between KY 817 and the Lincoln/Boyle County line.

KYTC along with WSP USA Consulting Services has been working to analyze existing conditions and wants to hear from you regarding your safety and traffic concerns within the study area.
