2023-04-26 - Downtown Columbia, KY - Photo by Vicky Pike of Miss Vicky's Pampered Angus Ranch.
The strongest appeals made to Fiscal Court, of all the county business items on the April agenda, came from law enforcement - Jailer Jamie Richards, at left, and Sheriff Josh Brockman, at right. Both men stated they need more help and can't keep employees without being able to raise compensation to be competitive with surrounding counties. County Treasurer Melinda Quinn is in the center. A county budget meeting is scheduled for Friday morning at 8:30amCT in the Courthouse Annex basement. It is open to the public.

Letter: Regarding Squires Cemetery

By Billy J. Hagy

Citizens of the Town of Columbia, Kentucky and Adair County, Kentucky, I urge the powers that be in charge of the Columbia and Adair County government to leave the Squires Cemetery graves as they are in their current place. These people are relatives of not only mine, but probably are also to many in Adair County and Columbia presently. It's been stated by Donna Rieder that the moving of these graves, "is nothing short of sacrilege."

I wholeheartedly agree with Donna Rieder. One of those headstones has been identified as belonging to "Mollie S. Squires (1861/3-1888). Mollie was married to "Marion Franklin Harmon (1861-1940). They had two daughters, Lena (1883-1921) and Carrie Harmon (1886-1969). These people are cousins of mine. I guarantee there are many more descendants of this family besides myself that are still alive.

Soft lockdown reported by Adair School District

Dr. Pamela A. Stephens,
Superintendent, Adair County Board of Education

At approximately 11:15 AM Tuesday an Adair County Schools administrator was made aware that a subject with possible sex offender noncompliance issues was on or around campus. It was reported that the subject had walked on or near campus from an adjoining apartment complex.

Once the report was received from local law-enforcement all our schools were placed on soft lockdown out of caution. Within a very brief period, less than 2 minutes, the subject was apprehended in a location off Adair County Schools campus.

At no point were any students in danger or was this subject in contact with any students or a school building.

Adair County Schools would like to say thank you for quick response from Adair County schools, administrators and staff, Columbia City Police, and other local law-enforcement agencies, including our four school resource officers Mark Harris, Adam Cravens, John Harris, and Jimmy Luttrell.
