Ricky Lee Pickett, formerly of Columbia, was found deceased on Tuesday, June 7, 2022 at his residence. He was 64 years old.

The family has chosen cremation, and no service is planned at this time.

If anyone wants some cherry tomato plants -- note -- these are plants -- we have thousands at the Green River Animal Shelter (free).

They are behind the shelter so you don't even have to come in, all you have to do is bring something to put them in and pull them up - they are in gravel so very easily pulled. Call 270-385-9655 if you have questions.

Rev. Herbert Janes, 81, Adair Co., KY (1940-2022)

Rev. Herbert Janes of the Portland Community died on Monday, June 6, 2022 at 6:23 P.M. at T.J. Health Columbia. He was 81 years old.

The funeral service will be held at 10amCT on Friday, June 10, 2022, at Tarter's Chapel Church (My Father's House), 3400 Milltown Road, Columbia, with David Martin, Bro. Jimmy D. Cox and Bro. Larry Wisdom officiating. Burial will follow in Tarter's Chapel Cemetery, with full military honors presented by V.F. W. Post 6097.

Visitation is requested after 4pmCT on Thursday at Grissom-Martin Funeral Home, 200 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY, and will continue after 8amCT on Friday at the Church.

The Columbia-Adair County Volunteer Fire Department collected $52,851.76 for the $2022 WHAS Crusade for Children. This is an increase from last year, and we would like to thank everyone that donated.

ACSO: Man airlifted after Monday morning dump truck rollover

On Monday, June 6, 2022, at around 8:10am, Adair County 911 received a call about an overturned dump truck located 9 miles east of Columbia on KY Highway 80.

Deputy Gary Roy with the Adair County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to the scene along with Adair County EMS and the Columbia Adair Fire Department.

Preliminary investigation shows that Christopher Anderson 50, of Taylor County, was traveling west on KY 80 in a 1992 international dump truck when the truck dropped off the right shoulder of the roadway.

ACSO: Adair man in custody after Vester Road altercation

On Monday, June 6, 2022, at approximately 5amCT, K-9 Deputy Chandler Staten and Deputy Kenny Perkins responded to a disturbance on Vester Road that resulted in multiple 911 calls.

Deputies located the suspect traveling on Vester Road as he was leaving a residence where a physical altercation had taken place. Deputies were nearly struck head on by the Toyota truck he was operating.

The suspect left the roadway and struck a brick entrance to a private drive. He continued to disobey commands to exit the vehicle, and was trying to get the truck unstuck when Deputy Staten deployed a taser.

Vivian C. Wilcher Christie, 81, Campbellsville, KY (1941-2022)

Vivian C. Wilcher Christie of Campbellsville passed away on Saturday, June 4, 2022. She was 81 years old.

A graveside service will be held at 1pmET on Thursday, June 9, 2022 at Elk Horn Cemetery in Elk Horn, officiated by Bro. Eddie Finn.

Dawn Clark Morgan, 88, Green County, KY (1933-2022)

Dawn Clark Morgan of Greensburg, Kentucky, daughter of the late Vernon Lee Clark and Hallie Ervin Clark, was born on Thursday, August 31, 1933 in Green County and departed this life on Friday, June 3, 2022 at the T.J. Samson Hospital in Glasgow. She was 88 years, 9 months, and 3 days of age.

She had made a profession of faith in Christ and was a member of the Penick's Missionary Baptist Church in Edmonton. She was also a former Certified Nursing Assistant for Green Hill Manor Nursing & Rehab Center.

Adair County's Deluge, 115 years ago today, June 7, 2022

One hundred fifteen years ago, 7 June 1907, was a day that shall never be forgotten in this county. An isolated weather-event that became national news placed Gradyville and Adair County at the center of newspaper readers' focus--the devastating Gradyville Flood claimed multiple lives and changed families forever.

I feature this, or a version, every year at this time, for such events should be remembered so as to preserve the memories of those lost that fateful night.

Eddie Claywell, 80, Cumberland County, KY (1942-2022)

Lowell Edward "Eddie" Claywell, of Burkesville, passed away Sunday, June 5, 2022, having attained the age of 80 years, 4 months & 27 days.

He was a member of The First Christian Church of Burkesville, retired from Houchens Industries, and was a Lifelong Farmer.

He was born on Friday, January 9, 1942 in The Willis Creek Community of Cumberland County, Kentucky the son of Paul C. & Nina (Dicken) Claywell.

Shirley M. Giles, 86, Knifley, KY native (1936-2022)

Shirley M. Giles of Columbus, Indiana, passed away on Sunday June 5, 2022 at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility. She was 86 years old.

Funeral services will be held at 3pmET on Wednesday, June 8, 2022, in Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home, 3855 25th St., Columbus, IN, with Pastor Travis Stamper officiating.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 8, 2022, from 1pmET until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Shirley will be laid to rest with her parents at the Mount Carmel Cemetery in Columbia, KY, at 1pmCT on Thursday, June 9, 2022.

MCHS students among winners of 2022 KDA Poster and Essay Contest

Frankfort, KY - The winners of the Kentucky Department of Agriculture's annual Poster and Essay Contest were announced during an awards ceremony on Friday at Wild Health Field in Lexington. The theme of the contest, "Kentucky Agriculture Sustains Me," reflected on the importance of farmers.

Among the essay winners were Metcalfe County High School 10th grader Emily Shaw and Metcalfe County High School Senior Robert Walker.

"These students did an excellent job of showcasing their artist skills, while also embracing the important role of today's farmers," Commissioner of Agriculture Dr. Ryan Quarles said. "Congratulations to each of these winners who so vividly depicted in art and writing how the entire world should appreciate what our agriculture producers do for us."

Reminder: Green Thumb Class is Tuesday

From Veronica Arnold, with Adair County Extension Master Gardner program

On Tuesday, June 7, 2022, from 10amCT to NoonCT at the Adair County Extension Office, 409 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY, there is a gardening meeting for children. The class is being presented by Adair County Extension Master Gardner program. This is the first class, in a series of 3 classes, one a month this summer.

The class is free but please call ahead to ensure supplies are available. Children will be given a short lesson then hands on learning and a short crafts project, and time for the children to share.

Wright, Gibson and Ackerman honored in annual EIT program

Russell County's education community is featured in Campbellsville University's Excellence in Teaching Award Program. This year it honored 218 teachers throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky from 76 districts and/or private schools.

The purpose of the program is to recognize the quality teaching and learning taking place in the school systems throughout Kentucky. The teachers are selected by their school districts in each grade level (preschool/elementary, middle and high school).

Phyllis Popplewell Gosser Roy Meeks, 81, Ono, KY native

Phyllis Popplewell Gosser Roy Meeks, age 81, passed away at her home on Saturday, June 4, 2022.

Phyllis was born on February 9, 1941, to Alonzo and Roxie Popplewell, in Ono, Kentucky. Phyllis was a teacher for 44 years as a reading specialist. She was a member of Ono Community Church, and she loved the Lord with her whole heart.
