Ring the Bell for Literacy with MC Elementary School

Join in the Ring the Bell for Literacy celebration for Metcalfe County Elementary students Friday, April 22, 2022 at 9amCT and 10:30am at the entrance of the Metcalfe County historic courthouse on the Square in Edmonton.

This program recognizes new readers in kindergarten and first grade. Students will be invited to ring the bell at the historic courthouse.

The bell ringing will let everyone know that we have a new reader among us. After the bell ringing ceremony, students will sign their name in the official book of names stating that they have read a book aloud and rung the Literacy Bell.

Joe Lee Martin, 79, Metcalfe County, KY (1942-2022)

Joe Lee Martin, age 79, of Edmonton, passed away Monday, April 04, 2022 at T.J Samson Community Hospital. He was born April 5, 1942 in Barren County, KY to the late Buford and Minnie Forrest Martin.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Smith Martin of Edmonton; one daughter, Robin Garmon (Steve) of Summer Shade; one son, Raymond Martin (Connie) of Edmonton; four grandchildren, Rhiannon Garmon (Derek Mills), Dalton Martin (Bethany Wheeler), Michael Garmon (Cheyenne Perry), and Reagan Harbison (Hunter); two great-grandchildren, Kason and Kambree Harbison; one step-brother Billy Joe Jennings of Glasgow, and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Louie Harris, 65, Russell County, KY (1956-2022)

Herbert Lewis "Louie" Harris, of Russell Springs, passed away on Monday, April 4, 2022. He was 65 years of age.

He was a former carpet installer and a member of West 80 Church of God. He loved the Lord and his family and was always a great provider for his loved ones. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, fishing, and just being outdoors. He never met a stranger and was always making someone laugh and smile. No matter what he was doing, things had to be done "his way."

Johnnie Warf, 90, Metcalfe County, KY (1931-2022)

John Howard "Johnnie" Warf, Sr., 90 of Edmonton passed away peacefully, April 3, 2022 at his home surrounded by family. Born November 6, 1931 the son of the late Teddy Vechal and Susan Elizabeth Finn Warf. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a son Stevie Joe Warf. A son in law Paul Mosby, Two sisters, Lucille Edwards and Jodie Ann Curry. Two brothers, Ray and Ernest Warf.

Johnnie was a member of the Pleasant Valley Cumberland Presbyterian church and retired as Metcalfe County Barn Supervisor.

Adair Co. Republican Party meeting April 28

The next meeting of the Adair County Republican Party will be at 6pmCT on Thursday, April 28, 2022, in the basement of the Annex building, 424 Public Square, Columbia KY.

This will be the last monthly meeting before the Primary and will be an excellent time to meet some of the candidates.

Easter Bunny at Trabue House on Friday

The Easter Bunny will be at the Trabue Russell House from 1pmCT until 2pmCT (or while supplies last) on Friday, April 8, 2022.

Books will be given to the first children attending. All children attending will receive an Easter basket.

NWS: Cold front will bring chance of storms

The National Weather Service in Louisville KY issued the following Hazardous Weather Outlook for an area including Adair and all surrounding counties at 10:58amET on Wednesday, Apr 6, 2022:
Today, a cold front will bring widespread showers and a few thunderstorms to the region. Some of these thunderstorms could become strong or severe, especially in the Lake Cumberland region.
Winds could gust as high as 24 mph as the front moves through. Freezing temperatures are expected early Sunday morning, with some locations seeing a drop into the 20s.

Research Center ribbon cutting scheduled for April 19

Tuesday, April 19th was a big day for many of us in the pandemic year of 2021. It was an event to be remembered because that was the day we opened the doors to the Adair Genealogy and History Research Center to the public for the first time.

And the researcher and visitors came! We had a great opening and wonderful support since that time.

There will be an official "Ribbon Cutting" event on the one year anniversary, at 10amCT on Tuesday, April 19, 2022, shine or rain. Everyone is invited to come to the event, tour the collections, and rejoice in the history of our county and town.

Five Duties in Endemic Times

March 16, 2020 was the day the pandemic forced us to shut down our lobby and service our patients strictly via our drive-thru windows or our delivery service. Lots of loved ones have gone on since then, but you and I were fortunate enough to make it through these past two years. Now what? What have we learned?

We saw that living a proactively healthy lifestyle provides us resiliency, but will we continue to fuel ourselves with super-processed sugary and floury excuses for food, lead sedentary lifestyles, and voluntarily subject ourselves to carcinogens?

We have duties in these endemic times. Here are my perspectives on five of them.

KY 90 in Cumberland Co to one lane next week

Somerset, KY - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 8 advises motorists that the KY 90 bridge (mile point 14.1) over the Cumberland River in Burkesville will be temporarily reduced to one lane next week as crews perform routine bridge inspections.

Janice Antle Burris, 65, Columbia, KY (1956-2022)

Janice Antle Burris of Columbia passed away on Tuesday April 5, 2022 at her residence. She was 65 years old.

The funeral service will be held at 11amCT on Thursday, April 7, 2022, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg St., Columbia, KY, with Bro. Paul Patton officiating. Burial will follow in the Haven Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be on Wednesday from 4pmCT until 8pmCT, and will continue on Thursday until time for the service at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home.

Mayor's highlights of the month of March 2022

The Columbia City Gas Department is continuing their work on the GPS System for the city. Currently they are at: 43,297.35 feet (over eight miles); and, 229 valves that have been located.

Synergy Food Group LLC held their open house and ribbon-cutting this month. We appreciate Greg Durrett, Shane Lee, and their team locating in our community. Approximately 100 people attended the event.

Cora Elizabeth Design (Beth Bailey) held their ribbon-cutting on Friday, March 11, 2022, at their location on Hurt Street. Welcome to Columbia.
