Rev. Wyatt G. Montgomery Goes to Egypt, 1922 By JIM In 1900, Z.T. Williams, and Elder of the Christian church (and still a partner in the Wheat & Williams General Store at Montpelier), made an extended sojourn through the Holy Lands. Several year later, Wyatt G. Montgomery, a fellow Adair Countian and minister of the Christian Church, then pastoring in Pulaski County, KY, followed in Z.T.'s footsteps. The Adair County News dated February 28, 1922, quoting from a recent edition of the Somerset Journal, commented that he planned "to sail from New York [on] March 8th with a company of about twenty ministers for a three months' visit to the Holy Lands." Nearly three months later, the May 18, 1922 edition of The Commonwealth (Somerset, Ky.) carried a lengthy, undated letter from Rev. Montgomery in Egypt, in which he spoke of the first leg of the journey, mentioning that the SS Arabic, the ship the men had been aboard for 24 days, had dropped anchor in the bay of Alexander, Egypt, on Sunday, April 1st. Lived in... By Mike Watson "Lived in." That covers a lot of territory, with many connotations and meanings. One usage implies/indicates residence. There was a time, not so long ago, in Adair County when we recognized numerous communities--post office areas, voting precincts, church and school districts, and many more. One may have live at Feathersburg or Inroad, Keltner or Sano, and so on. With discontinuance of small post offices, closing of country stores, and consolidation of schools came disassociation of persons with their place of residence, birth, or ancestral connection. Beginning in the mid-to-late 1970s many Adair residents became "of Columbia" to others--not themselves. Thankfully there are some instances still in newspapers and on-line sources making an effort to maintain a connection with our neighborhoods of the past. So, if you reside near Breeding or Casey Creek and are referred to as "of Columbia", don't be offended, just remind people of where you are actually from in this county. Remember our history. --MCW 2022-02-27 08:07:08 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Mike Watson - History
