Carol Perkins: Life's Chapters, Four - Parades and Santa

Previous Chapter: Life's Chapters, Three - My Town at Christmas

By Carol Perkins

Chapter Four brings us to Christmas parades and Santa. Years ago, each county school traditionally entered a float, as well as various school clubs, local civic organizations, churches, and individual families.

The Christmas parade was a "humdinger." Santa usually rode on the fire truck and threw candy to anxious children, who dashed into the street to gather as much as they could without thought of being run over by the following float. Santa moved to a picture-taking location and parents lined up with their children, some of whom were bawling.

The high school marching band led the parade from the parking lot of the high school (before it moved to the hill), up the hill where Jr. Foods once was, around the square, and back to the school.

I mention the hill because that was an obstacle for the tractor or trucks pulling the floats.

Chance for storms, heavy rainfall overnight

Mike Keltner, Director of Adair County Emergency Management, sends word today that there is a chance of severe weather in the area tonight as a cold front approaches Kentucky.

As of around 3pmCT on Friday, the National Weather Service in Louisville warned that evening and overnight storms could produce damaging winds and isolated tornadoes as a cold front approaches and moves through the region late tonight into early Saturday morning. The warning area included Adair and all surrounding counties. Intense rainfall rates may lead to localized flooding concerns.

Mobile homes are particularly vulnerable to strong winds and even relatively weak tornadoes. Vulnerable populations should have ways to receive warnings that will wake them up out of a sound sleep may wish to consider finding sturdier shelter well before the storms hit, such as at a friend's or relative's, to stay at Friday.

KYTC Saving Lives Challenge

By Chuck Wolfe

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear on Friday announced yet another public opportunity for Kentuckians as young as 5 to protect themselves and those around them with free vaccinations against the deadly COVID-19 virus.

The KYTC Saving Lives Challenge will take place on two dates - December 15, 2021, and January 6, 2022 - in the auditorium of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet office building, 200 Mero Street, Frankfort, KY. The Pfizer vaccine will be offered to people needing a first shot, second shot or booster shot. Children 5 to 12 years old are eligible. Appointments can be made at COVID-19 Vaccine Reservation - Wild Health. Walk-ins will be served if slots are available.

Total revenues for the month were $1.17 billion, the third consecutive month in which revenues have surpassed one billion dollars. Receipts have now risen 17.3 percent for the first five months of the fiscal year, significantly higher than budgeted estimates. National Influenza Vaccination Week, Dec. 5-11, 2021

By Susan Dunlap

Frankfort, KY - Kentuckians are encouraged to get a flu vaccination during National Influenza Vaccination Week, Dec. 5-11, to prevent the spread of flu this holiday season.

"The flu vaccine is the single best way to protect yourself and your loved ones against the flu," said Dr. Steven Stack, commissioner of the Kentucky Department for Public Health (KDPH). "If you are vaccinated, you are less likely to get the flu and spread the flu to those at greatest risk for becoming dangerously ill, including young children, pregnant women, people 65 and older and those with underlying medical conditions. With COVID-19 cases escalating and the added threat of circulating flu viruses, it is imperative that every Kentuckian take the essential steps to protect themselves, their loved ones and their communities."

KDPH officials report weekly to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as part of statewide flu surveillance efforts. Kentucky currently is reporting 36 laboratory-confirmed cases of flu with the state flu activity level currently classified as "Local." The weekly report is now available online and is updated each Friday.

CU: Hartman discusses impact of art and faith on his life

By Gerard Flanagan

Campbellsville, KY - How did a self-proclaimed goofball end up using his artistic talents to praise God? Tim Hartman hasn't taken the typical route in sharing the message of God. You won't find him behind a pulpit on Sunday morning. Instead, you'll likely find him doing a stand-up comedy act or performing in a play.

"God made us to be creative," Hartman, who lives in Pittsburgh, PA, said during a speaking engagement via Zoom to Campbellsville University theater students recently at the Russ Mobley Theater. "God blessed me with lots of different skills. I learned early on I wanted art to be the general thrust of what I did."
