Letter: Concern over lack of temperature checks

Janet Piercy Willerson writes:
I accidently learned this morning that Adair County Schools are no longer checking the temperatures of children prior to entering the school buildings or boarding the school buses.

It is my understanding from talking with Dr. Pam Stephens that the temperature taking is no longer a state or federal requirement. A school system can opt to continue taking temperatures at their discretion.

I think temperatures of these children should continue to be taken. I have not seen any information advising of this change in procedure for Adair County.

Letter: Was Jennell Burton's Dad pastor at Ono?

Ann Goff writes:
I was just looking at the work that Jennell Burton does, it is beautiful. I would like to know if her Dad was a minister and if he was the pastor at Ono Community church years ago?

If it is, I know her, she has cooked meals for Jim and I, and I used to visit with her when she worked at K-mart and bought jewelry from her. I loved her Mom and Dad. - Ann
Re: Who needs google when you have Jennell

Ann, thank you for your letter about Jennell Burton and her work. This question is posted and we'll look for more details from readers. We thank her granddaughter Tiffany Stephens for helping Jennell "get Jesus on Columbia Magazine." - LW

Kentucky tops South Central Region in Site Selection rankings

By Crystal Staley/Jack Mazurak

Frankfort, KY - Though the past year brought no shortage of obstacles for businesses across the globe, private-sector companies continued to announce job-creating projects in the commonwealth as Team Kentucky works to build a stronger economy for the long-term.

As evidence, Site Selection magazine's annual Governor's Cup rankings for 2020 positioned Kentucky atop the South Central region, and third nationally, for qualifying projects per capita. The commonwealth also placed seventh overall in total projects, the highest of any state with a population under 5 million.

"The past year has been one of undeniable challenges and hardship, but 2020 also proved how resilient Kentucky is, and that virtue most certainly applies to our business community," Gov. Andy Beshear said. "Even with all the pandemic's uncertainty, companies announced thousands of quality opportunities for Kentuckians. Building an economy that works for everyone remains a top priority. We made progress last year, and we have already seen encouraging signs that our economy is prepared to take a big leap forward in 2021."

Poetry by Robert Stone: Shadow faults where none should be

Shadow faults where none should be: a word list sonnet for Poetry in the Boro
Four days ago I had a wisdom tooth
extracted, prologue to more dental work,
a reckoning for sad but simple truth
I am a runaway a hygiene shirk.

From sovereign succulents to frosty scoops
I chew the solids and I slurp the soft,
a juxtaposing hearty meats with soups,
forgetting chasing mouth debris too oft.

My dentist says it is a groundhog day
and he sees shadow faults where none should be
a clutch of boney structures with decay
just what I wish with which to not agree.

To think of brushing while the dentist drills
suffices not to upgrade cleansing skills.
- Robert Stone, 11 April 2021

We added fewer cases today than for the same time period last week. Therefore, our 7-day average incidence rate went down. Currently, our 7-day average incidence chart is showing 1 county in the "green-on-track" range, Clinton; 6 counties in the "yellow-community-spread" category, Adair, Cumberland, Green, Russell, Taylor, and Wayne; and 3 counties in the "orange-accelerated" range of community-spread: Casey, McCreary, and Pulaski. We are thankful to not have any "red-critical" counties now. Keep in mind, some of our 7-day-incidence data will be skewed over the next few days as we are reconciling our data against the state data.
