2021-03-15 - Exit #46 westbound, Columbia, KY - Photo by Victoria Pike of Miss Vicky's Pampered Angus Ranch.
Checking out my front view at Exit #46 onto the Cumberland Parkway, the wrecked semi was being hauled away after an all day closure of the westbound lanes to Edmonton. The state truck that had been there hour after hour with lights flashing, blocking entry during accident reconstruction, headed out and the first vehicles were allowed onto the reopened parkway right at 8pm. Kentucky State Police Post 15 is investigating what happened to cause the single vehicle accident early Monday morning.

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 3/15/2021

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

Our total number of new cases went down slightly compared to the last time-interval for this time last week, so our 7-day average incidence rate dropped slightly. We now have 5 counties in the "yellow-community-spread" category, Casey, Clinton, Cumberland, Russell, and Wayne; 4 counties in the "orange-critical" range of community-spread: Adair, McCreary, Pulaski, and Taylor; and 1 county in the "red-critical" range of community-spread: Green.

Until the vaccine is widely available, let's all do our part in slowing the spread of COVID-19 by wearing our face coverings, avoiding crowds (especially in confined spaces), social distancing when around others, increasing our hand hygiene, increasing our general sanitation, and by avoiding touching our faces.

Statewide Testing Positivity Rate: 3.99%.

"We've had nine straight weeks of declining cases and if we continue to see this trend, we can relax some of the restrictions even more. But we need to be careful and make sure we bring everybody to the finish line."

Licensing begins transition to Transportation Cabinet

By Naitore Djigbenou/Chuck Wolfe

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) Secretary Jim Gray announced nearly all driver licensing services for residents of Franklin and Woodford counties will be transferred from the circuit court clerks in the Judicial Branch to the KYTC as of Monday, March 22.

It is the next step in a phased, county-by-county transition of the process by which Kentuckians obtain operator licenses, learner permits and state identification cards. Services historically performed by the Office of Circuit Court Clerk in every Kentucky county will shift to a network of KYTC driver licensing regional offices across the Commonwealth.

To date, KYTC has driver licensing regional offices around the state. They are located in Paducah, Madisonville, Bowling Green, Owensboro, Louisville/Hurstbourne, Elizabethtown, Frankfort, Lexington, Burlington, Richmond, Columbia, Somerset, Jackson, Morehead and Prestonsburg. There also are smaller, temporary field offices at Louisville/Bowman Field and Catlettsburg.

Kentucky State Police will continue to oversee all permit and license testing. Franklin County and Woodford County residents may make an appointment online for written or road testing by visiting kentuckystatepolice.org/driver-testing. KSP will honor all existing scheduled appointments at the dates, times, and locations offered when scheduled initially.

Governor, First Lady celebrate 1 millionth vaccination

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear, First Lady Britainy Beshear and Kentucky Public Health Commissioner Dr. Steven Stack recognized the milestone of 1 million Kentuckians being vaccinated (photos here) during a ceremony at the state Capitol on Monday.

"This is truly both a miracle of modern medicine and tribute to so many Kentuckians whose tireless work made this possible," said Gov. Beshear. "This milestone brings us hope after losing nearly 5,000 of our beloved family members, friends and neighbors to COVID-19. Think about how far we have come in our ability to fight this virus, and how fast."

The first COVID-19 vaccines that arrived in Kentucky were administered to health care workers on Dec. 14. Now, three months later, health care heroes have vaccinated 1 million Kentuckians.

History Monday: Corn Growing Contest, 1911

By Mike Watson

Farming should never be far from the minds of those who like to eat. Agriculture has been the life's blood of this nation since the earliest days and will continue to be, for each of us, as long as we reside upon the top side of the sod. Our modern era has created a culture causing many to forget--or never to learn--where their sustenance originates. Urban living has created a multi-generational gap between the origins and the end products, packaged and on a shelf. Agriculture is at the heart of our survival.

From a contest publicized in the Adair County News, issue of 15 March 1911, the following teens were turning their hands to growing a superior produce:

"The Corn Contest--The following boys have entered the corn contest. This interesting plan of corn growing was gotten up by M.C. Rankin, Commissioner of Agriculture. The seed corn will be sent to N.H. Moss, County Judge of Adair County, and will be here for distribution in a short time.

Those participating:

ACJE: Fiscal Court working to help Sheriff Brockman

By Gale Cowan
Adair County Judge Executive

I agree with Vickie that the Sheriff and his staff are doing an outstanding job. The Fiscal Court had planned to give Sheriff Brockman the money he requested but that request was stopped in Frankfort when they failed to approve our budget amendment to do so.

Pursuant to KRS 64.710 the Fiscal Court cannot give the Sheriff's Office a lump sum of money. They can, however, pay for specific invoices if the sheriff presents them to the fiscal court for payment or reimbursement. I am still working with Sheriff Brockman to assist him any way I can legally do so.
