Letter: Photo brings memories of Breeding Store

Stephen D Collins writes:
I remember very fondly this store known to us grandchildren as the "goodie" store. My grandfather would take us for RC cola and Moon Pies (my personal favorite as a child). I remember the creak of the front door and the smell of the wood stove in the winter. Thank you for a wonderful trip down memory lane.

This Week in Frankfort: State budget work moving forward

By Robert Weber, LRC

Frankfort, KY - This year, for the first time since the Kentucky General Assembly began holding annual sessions in 2001, lawmakers continued their work into a second week of an odd-numbered year session before starting a recess that will last until early February.

Legislative leaders said working the extra days gave them a chance to move priority bills through the process. It also allowed them to jumpstart budget deliberations.

It's unusual for lawmakers to create a state budget during an odd-numbered year. State budgets that cover two-year cycles are typically created during even-numbered years, when the legislature holds longer 60-day sessions. However, the COVID-19 pandemic was spreading at the peak of budget-making season last year. Policy experts were wary of planning two years' worth of spending at a time when no one knew the toll the pandemic would take on the economy and state revenues. They decided to pass a one-year budget then, setting the stage to return to the negotiating table this year to plan a budget for the upcoming fiscal year, which begins July 1.

Letter: Downtown Columbia

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
I can only suppose that folks who might not be familiar with Downtown Columbia could easily conclude that this picture is suffering with the wrong cutline!
Comments re Weather changing, snow started, then stopped
Good point, Billy Joe! Anyone who doesn't know about the beautiful little farm in the middle of downtown would definitely think I put the wrong information with this snowy picture. I'm always grateful for the scene from my home, the Arnold's Roseland Plantation, which usually includes a couple of pretty horses. - LW

LCDHD: COVID-19 update and vaccination status

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 1/15/2021

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

The Lake Cumberland area remains largely in Phase 1a of our COVID-19 response. This includes vaccines for healthcare workers and first responders. Let us also not forget about the federal contract with Walgreens and CVS pharmacies to vaccinate the long-term care facilities and personal care homes -- residents and staff.

We are not pre-registering for future vaccination phases currently, as vaccines are not readily available at the local health departments.

According to the Governor, the next big push of the COVID-19 vaccine will be to vaccinate school faculty and staff. While the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital will still, at least for the near future, be receiving 500 doses per week as a regional COVID-19 Center, much of the remaining supply of vaccine over the next few weeks will likely be tied up with the effort to vaccinate school personnel.

Gov. Beshear provides update on COVID-19

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Today, Gov. Andy Beshear updated Kentuckians about COVID-19 case information and vaccines, as well as security measures at the State Capitol this weekend.

"These case numbers are still far too high, but there is hopeful news today, too. We are on track as we ramp up to meet our goal of administering 90% of all vaccine received within seven days of arrival," said Gov. Beshear. "In fact, last week we administered more doses of vaccine than we received."

The Governor said 325,625 COVID-19 vaccine doses have been received in Kentucky and 190,547 doses have been administered. Of those doses, 31,158 have been administered to long-term care facility residents and staff.
