Letter: Journey to the Manger

Shannon Sexton writes:
We loved Journey to the Manger last year! Many thanks to those that worked tirelessly in order to offer such a great display for the community that was all about Jesus, as it should be! We will miss the Journey this year but hope to see it again in the future. It was truly one of my favorite memories of last Christmas season.

ACSO: Firearms will be turned over to KSP

By Sheriff Josh Brockman
Adair County Sheriff's Office

The Adair County Sheriff's Office is preparing to transport firearm--seized during arrests made by the Sheriff's Office for criminal offenses--to the Kentucky State Police in Frankfort, where they will be sold or destroyed.

These guns were seized because they were involved in drug-related offenses, were used in commission of a crime, or were found to be unlawfully in the possession of a convicted felon.

The cases involving the firearms have already been adjudicated in Adair Circuit and Districts Courts. Commonwealth's Attorney Brian Wright and County Attorney Jennifer Hutchison Corbin petitioned the courts in each of the cases for the guns to be forfeited in accordance with KRS 16.220 and 500.080. Orders granting those motions were signed by Judge Judy Vance Murphy and Judge Michael Loy.

By Kentucky statute, these guns will be turned over to the Kentucky State Police where they will be auctioned at a public sale, or destroyed if they are deemed unsafe.

Governor: Record COVID-19 deaths for second day in a row

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Today, Gov. Andy Beshear announced record new COVID-19 deaths and the sixth-highest day for new COVID-19 cases. With the 37 deaths reported Wednesday, the Governor has reported the loss of 72 Kentuckians in the last two days alone as the commonwealth rapidly approaches 2,000 deaths.

The White House Report for Kentucky said, "The COVID risk to all Americans is at a historic high. We are in a very dangerous place due to the current, extremely high COVID baseline and limited hospital capacity; a further post-Thanksgiving surge will compromise COVID patient care, as well as medical care overall.

"New orders put in place by the Governor should result in a rapid decrease in transmission if compliance is high."

"We've got the foremost experts in the country saying we've got a winning game plan," said Gov. Beshear. "The question is, is everybody going to do their part to execute that game plan? We can stop this surge. It's in our hands. I certainly am going to try my best each and every day."

Drive-Thru at Milltown will hopefully return in 2021

Response to Letter: Will there be a Milltown Christmas display?

By Ann Smith

THANK YOU so much for asking about the drive-thru. We really appreciate your interest.

Journey to the Manger, the drive-thru to Bethlehem, held in the Portland/Milltown community of Adair County, will NOT be held this year. 2019 was the first time in 3 years that the congregations of Pickett's Chapel and Tarter's Chapel had presented Journey to the Manger, and while we humbly enjoy spreading Jesus' birth through live scenes, it is quite an undertaking of personnel. Due to Covid and social distancing, this year we would have the extra care and safety of each of our biblical characters to consider.

Hopefully, Journey to the Manger will return within the next couple of years, and again, thank you for your interest. It warms our hearts to know it is remembered.

ISP seeks hosts for LWC International students

By Sabine Eastham, Director
Lindsey Wilson College International Student Program

Hosts do not house international students. Rather they agree to have regular contact with the students throughout the school year. It usually involves having them to your house a few times a year for a meal or special event and checking in on them periodically to make sure they are adjusting to American life. When our college's international students return to their home country, they will tell their family all about America and what they have found here in Columbia with their host family.

We are looking for area families and individuals to participate in LWC's "International Friendship Program" and serve as host families for LWC's international students. We are very fortunate to have such a fantastic network of local host families. When area families get involved with our international students, they become part of a ripple effect. They play a big part in introducing international students to American life. Sharing local and family traditions with international students will help them understand what America is all about. They are young, they are here in Columbia, and they are eager to learn about American life beyond the college campus.

I could write much more about this fantastic opportunity, but what would be better than sharing what our local hosts have said:

Letter: Question about flu data

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
Speaking of the flu, how many flu deaths have there been in the United States this year and how do those flu deaths compare with pre-Covid 19 yearly flu deaths?
Comments re: COVID-19: if you think it's no worse than flu

Thanks for writing. We don't yet have data for the current 2020/2021 season. Based on lab reports of confirmed cases, the CDC states that "Seasonal influenza activity in the United States remains lower than usual for this time of year."

For previous flu seasons, the following numbers are large scale statistical estimates* from the CDC web site's page www.cdc.gov/flu/about/burden/past-seasons.html:
  • 2013/2014 Flu Deaths Estimate*: 38,000
  • 2014/2015 Flu Deaths Estimate*: 51,000
  • 2015/2016 Flu Deaths Estimate*: 23,000
  • 2016/2017 Flu Deaths Estimate*: 38,000
  • 2017/2018 Flu Deaths Estimate*: 61,000
  • 2018/2019 Flu Deaths Estimate*: 34,000
  • 2019/2020 Flu Deaths Estimate*: 22,000
  • 2020/2021 Current season not yet estimated
*The page linked above provides details about how these estimates are calculated, as well as broader ranges of possible numbers with higher statistical confidence. In addition, numbers since 2016 are only preliminary estimates, and there are not yet estimates for the current 2020/2021 flu season.

The total of the estimated flu deaths for all the 7 years above is 267,000.

Wreath program honors fallen Kentucky State Police troopers

By Sgt. Billy Gregory

Frankfort, KY - It can be hard for families who have lost someone dear to them to find the holiday spirit, especially those that have lost a loved one in the line of duty. Two women over 600 miles apart connected through social media to turn their tragedies into an honorable holiday tradition. In doing so, they have helped other families like theirs begin to heal.

The Fallen Heroes Wreath Program was started by the family of Philadelphia police officer, John Pawlowski, who was killed in the line of duty on February 13, 2009. Pawlowski's sister-in-law, Michelle Pawlowski was inspired by the national 'Wreaths Across America' program and with the help of her family, they produced and placed Christmas wreaths at the final resting places of fallen law enforcement officers during the holiday season.
