ISP seeks hosts for LWC International students

Lindsey Wilson College International Student Program

Hosts do not house international students. Rather they agree to have regular contact with the students throughout the school year. It usually involves having them to your house a few times a year for a meal or special event and checking in on them periodically to make sure they are adjusting to American life. When our college's international students return to their home country, they will tell their family all about America and what they have found here in Columbia with their host family.

We are looking for area families and individuals to participate in LWC's "International Friendship Program" and serve as host families for LWC's international students. We are very fortunate to have such a fantastic network of local host families. When area families get involved with our international students, they become part of a ripple effect. They play a big part in introducing international students to American life. Sharing local and family traditions with international students will help them understand what America is all about. They are young, they are here in Columbia, and they are eager to learn about American life beyond the college campus.

I could write much more about this fantastic opportunity, but what would be better than sharing what our local hosts have said:

  • The Coleman Family: "Our favorite thing about it is expanding their family with students from all around the world."

  • The Konsavage Family: "Our favorite thing about being a host family is the relationships we have made with the students, as they have become like family. They enjoy keeping in touch even when they go back home, and we love to have them be a part of our lives while they are here. Every one of them has been so sweet and friendly."

  • The Payne Family: "What we love most about our involvement in this program is getting to know students from another country and learning about their culture and teaching them about ours."

  • The Fugate Family: "Our favorite thing about it is the opportunity to expand our horizons by being exposed to different cultures, while cultivating lifelong memories and relationships with our host students. Our children can experience the world in an entirely unique way, and our entire family has been greatly enriched by this experience. We are looking forward to hosting many more students in the years to come."

  • The Marshburn Family: "I was hesitant, thinking we had very little to offer these young people from across the world. I had no idea what a wonderful experience we were beginning. We have had about 20 official students and a dozen or so unofficial. And we have enjoyed every single one of them. They are truly "our kids. We have experienced happy times and sad times, successes and disappointments, laughter, and tears. There are no words adequate to describe the wonders that come with being a host parent. Looking forward to what is ahead for us all. "

  • Fiona Curty, one of their former students from Switzerland had this to say about her time with the Marshburns:" My dearest host family. They made my American experience an American dream, and I am so grateful for them and for Lindsey Wilson College for their host family program. I could not thank you enough Jeanne McGill Marshburn and Charles Marshburn for welcoming me into your home a few years ago, it made my time so much better and my experience so much richer. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I miss you terribly."

  • The Hunt Family: "We are getting an extraordinary opportunity to share our life experiences with young, international students from around the world. We attempt to share aspects of our cultural values without promoting the same. This is a continuous & very distinct exchange of information between the various cultures."

  • The Kolbenschlag Family: "I so much appreciate the International Student Program that LWC offers to students and our whole community. I see photos of students from many different countries sharing friendships with each other and with U.S. students without regard to nationalities. These interactions have a long-term effect as we get to know and care about other people and their cultures and they get to know us personally, not just from stories they may have read in the news. The program offers insight to our local students who may not have a chance to know someone from another country. It tells me, also, that parents all over the world are raising wonderful children as I have observed as a host family. This program is truly a VERY important part of education!"

  • The Owens Family: "We are thrilled to be host parents to Mayu and have truly enjoyed learning of her Japanese heritage and exposing her to American culture."
