Governor's Monday update: 376 new cases By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear on Monday updated Kentuckians on the state's continuing efforts to fight the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) in the commonwealth. "We are certainly in a time of crisis, and it's one where our character and how we respond has never been more important," the Governor said. "If crisis shows our character, is it one that yells at the checkout clerk who tells us we have to be wearing a facial covering? Is it one where if somebody is for something, we're against it just because? Or is it one where we put the health and lives of our neighbors above our personal interests, a time where our character shows more kindness and empathy to one another than ever before, knowing we are all going through something very difficult?" Case Information - Monday, Aug. 17 As of 4 p.m. Aug. 17, Gov. Beshear said there were at least 39,691 coronavirus cases in Kentucky, 376 of which were newly reported Monday. Fourteen of the newly reported cases were from children ages 5 and younger, including two 11-month-olds. "Fifty-four of these cases are from people 18 or younger," said Gov. Beshear. "Just based on that, when they might have been going back to school today or next Monday, I think the right decision was made even if it was a hard one." GSP celebrates unique, successful 2020 summer program By JT Henderson Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Governor's Scholars Program (GSP), within the Education and Workforce Development Cabinet (EWDC), recognized 1,020 outstanding Kentucky high school seniors, representing all 120 counties, for completing the 38th summer program. The modified GSP summer program had a mixture of virtual and in-person experiences to keep students and staffers safe from COVID-19. Calling them his fellow scholars, Gov. Andy Beshear, a GSP alum from 1995, congratulated the scholars who received their certificates and were inducted into the Alumni Association of the Governor's Scholars Program on July 31, the last day of the 2020 summer program. During the GSP 2020 summer program, the governor spoke virtually to each group. "As a Governor's Scholars Program alum, I could not be more proud of these extraordinary scholars and the way they have conducted themselves during this unusual time. They were models of how to embrace COVID-19 health and safety practices so they could learn together, and I believe they will continue to model that in their home communities," said Gov. Beshear. "As the first alum to serve as Kentucky's governor, I want them to know that any dream they put their minds to and work hard at is possible." History Monday: The Mark Twain Festival, 1958 By Mike Watson How many readers recall the Mark Twain Festivals? It was a big deal for Columbia, girlhood home of Jane Lampton Clemens, mother of Samuel Langhorne Clemens, best known to the world as Mark Twain. Columbia and Adair County made a big showing for the Festival in May of 1958, with many sponsored activities to please the most discerning of the population. "Many local residents are going about their everyday affairs downtown dressed as if they might have stepped off an old Mississippi side-wheeler, and were walking to the mounting block. Beards of every size and description are in evidence everywhere. Ladies are decked out in sidewalk-sweeping gowns and bonnets reminiscent of the by-gone era of the late 1800s," according to the front page, above the fold article in the May 7th Adair County News.
