LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 07/31/2020

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

Except for the day of the Nursing Home outbreak in Adair, this was our highest day of new cases. We are now starting to see cases associated with youth sports such as little league baseball and school football summer preparations. This is just another important reminder that we should all observe the guidance.

Everyone should continue to wear their face coverings, avoid crowds as much as possible, social distance, wash their hands frequently, increase sanitation, and avoid the touching of their faces.

Deaths: We are sad to report 1 new death today from Taylor. We have experienced a total of 40 deaths resulting in a 3.7% mortality rate among known cases. Our hearts and prayers go out to all the families and friends who have lost loved ones.

Hospitalizations: We presently have 13 cases in the hospital. We have had a total of 111 hospitalizations resulting in a 10.3% hospitalization rate among known cases. The latest state data shows that 62% of ICU beds and 22% of ventilator capacity are being utilized.

Letter: Garbage men need protection and thanks

Joyce Coomer writes re news headline: Philadelphia Trash Piles Up As Pandemic Stymies Its Removal
While we are not having this severe a problem here, everyone needs to keep in mind that the local garbage haulers, government and private, provide a service that we tend to ignore until there is a problem. We should be thanking them for their commitment to helping keep the county neat, and remember that they do have a hazardous job.

I think they all need hazmat suits and should receive hazardous duty pay. There is no easy and quick way to determine what pathogens or other harmful materials may be lurking in garbage, even garbage that is neatly bagged.

The garbage men that I interact with are courteous and helpful. I would like to thank them for being that way and for the service they provide to the county.

Joyce M. Coomer, 270-384-4495

Quarles: USDA guidance on foreign seeds

The most likely cause of unsolicited shipments is a type of marketing scam known as Brushing.

By Sean Southard

Frankfort, KY - Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Ryan Quarles announced today the Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA) has created a webpage dedicated to sharing updated information about steps Kentuckians should take if they have received unsolicited seeds from foreign countries.

"The message is the same: Do not plant unsolicited seeds," Commissioner Quarles said. "If you have planted these seeds already, we are awaiting guidance from USDA about how to proceed. Once we have an update, we will be sure to let the public know."

"The Kentucky Department of Agriculture has received hundreds of phone calls and e-mails since Monday about unsolicited packages of seeds from foreign countries," Commissioner Quarles said. "While the U.S. Department of Agriculture has not received any indication that this could be anything more than a marketing scam, they continue to investigate this matter and provide guidance on what steps Kentuckians should take should they receive unsolicited seeds. The Kentucky Department of Agriculture is dedicated to sharing the best information with the public when we have it, and we encourage Kentuckians to visit kyagr.com/foreignseeds to stay current with the latest on this unusual situation."
