From Traci Pooler, Lindsey Wilson College

Lindsey Wilson College will not be giving the ACT on Saturday, July 18, 2020.

The test was canceled on July 8, but we became concerned this afternoon when we learned that some students have not received a follow-up letter from ACT to date.

If people have questions, they should contact ACT.

EWDC releases state unemployment report for June 2020

By Mike Clark/Patrick Harp

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky's seasonally adjusted preliminary June 2020 unemployment rate was 4.3 percent, according to the Kentucky Center for Statistics (KYSTATS), an agency within the Education and Workforce Development Cabinet (EWDC).

The preliminary June 2020 jobless rate was down 6.6 percentage points from May 2020 and equaled the 4.3 percent recorded for the state one year ago. The U.S. seasonally adjusted jobless rate for June 2020 was 11.1 percent, down from 13.3 percent in May 2020, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

Labor force statistics, including the unemployment rate, are based upon estimates from the Current Population Survey of households. The survey is designed to measure trends in the number of people working, and includes jobs in agriculture and individuals who are self-employed.

Kentucky's civilian labor force was 1,920,269 in June 2020, a decrease of 109,064 individuals from May 2020. The number of people employed in June increased by 28,536, while the number unemployed decreased by 137,600.

"Although Kentucky's unemployment rate fell to 4.3 percent in June, a level similar to rates at the beginning of the year, this does not indicate that Kentucky's economy has returned to normal," said University of Kentucky's Center for Business and Economic Research (CBER) Director Mike Clark, Ph.D. "The lower unemployment rate was driven primarily by a large number of unemployed workers who stopped looking for work. Employment did improve in June, but there were still approximately 158,000 fewer people employed in June than in February."

Governor's Scholars Program adapts in era of COVID-19

By JT Henderson

Frankfort, KY - The 38th annual Kentucky Governor's Scholars Program (GSP), within the Education and Workforce Development Cabinet (EWDC), is underway at two college campuses this summer but with a mixture of virtual and in-person experiences and other modifications to keep students and staff safe from COVID-19.

"I personally know how amazing and life-changing this program is for participants," said Gov. Andy Beshear. "Not only am I an alum from 1995, I am the first Governor's Scholar to ever serve as Kentucky's governor. I am excited that we have found a way to continue this excellent program while prioritizing the safety and well-being of the 2020 class of scholars and the staff."

In addition, the Governor has spoken via Zoom with every GSP group.

The 1,020 high school seniors selected from across Kentucky for GSP are attending shortened one-week residential programs instead five weeks. Class size has been reduced from about 19 students to about nine scholars, to promote social distancing. Instead of 340 scholars at three colleges and universities for five weeks, this year GSP has 85 to 125 students per week at two sites.

SOS issues SOS for poll workers

Adair County Clerk Lisa Greer says, "We can always use precinct workers. They can call our office to volunteer at 270-384-2801. We'd like them to contact us before the end of September so we can have them trained and ready for November."

By Miranda Combs

Frankfort, KY - Secretary of State Michael Adams is putting out an SOS for poll workers for the November election.

"Like most Kentuckians, I want things to get back to normal - and that includes our elections. I want more robust in-person voting options than we had in June, but that is only possible if Kentuckians step up and volunteer to be poll workers."

A typical Kentucky election entails approximately 3,700 voting locations and 15,000 poll workers. One of the reasons that June's primary offered so few voting locations is that so few Kentuckians volunteered to be poll workers. By law, each precinct voting location must have four poll workers, evenly split between registered Democrats and Republicans.

Carol Perkins: No easy answer for parents

Previous Column: Daily routines

By Carol Perkins

The debate continues about how to manage the coming school year. In some states, parents (along with their children) can decide if their student attends school or enrolls in a virtual classroom.

Guy and I were discussing what we would have done if we had had the choice when we were young. I didn't have to guess his decision; he would have stayed at home (back then with no computer), completed workbooks, and taken tests rather than walk up the hill to the Summer Shade Grade School and sit in a desk. Having no interest in attending school even at a young age, he would have been overjoyed not to go. However, his parents might have felt differently.

The confinement of a classroom under the authority of a teacher never appealed to him, but he missed the entire reason for attending---socializing. When I mentioned this, he assured me that he and his buddies would have done lots of "socializing" outside of school. They would have roamed the woods, gone squirrel hunting, shot basketball, and played on the school playground after hours.

I would have gone to school if my friends had.

COVID-19: Gov. Beshear's mid-week update

FRANKFORT, Ky. (July 15, 2020) - Gov. Andy Beshear on Wednesday updated Kentuckians on the state's ongoing efforts to fight the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) as cases continue to rise in the commonwealth.

"I think about this journey that we've been on, going back to our first case reported on March the 6th. I remember us taking very aggressive action, and while our actions were working watching what happened in New York, with devastating loss and hospitals overrun. I remember how our story wasn't that story, because we bought in, we accepted the actions that I had to take - not that I wanted to take - but that we had to take to protect human life. And together, we flattened that curve," the Governor said. "But now what we see is that same thing that was happening in New York happening in areas like Florida and Arizona, with ICUs filled up, and Arizona is ordering freezer trucks because their morgues are full. And here in Kentucky we are in a new time of escalating cases."
