Governor's Monday update

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear on Monday updated Kentuckians on the state's continued efforts to fight the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19).

"I hope everyone's Fourth of July weekend was filled with safely celebrating the founding of our great nation," the Governor said. "As we face the unprecedented challenges presented by the coronavirus pandemic, it's comforting to know Americans have faced great threats in the past and have passed the test of humanity. Now is our time to do the same."

The Governor reminded everyone that his next press briefing will be held Thursday, July 9, at 4pmET, not Tuesday, July 7, as previously was planned.

Case Information - Monday, July 6
As of 4 p.m. July 6, Gov. Beshear said there were at least 17,152 coronavirus cases in Kentucky, 268 of which were newly reported Monday.

"While the day-to-day reported cases fluctuate somewhat, our numbers have been holding remarkably steady even as other states have experienced sharp increases," the Governor said. "We can stay on this plateau and hopefully move to a steady decline in cases only if we follow the guidelines for social distancing, hand-washing, wearing cloth face masks and limiting our exposure to crowds. We also need to get tested regularly and to answer the call when contact tracers reach out with information."

KYTC: Stop speeding before it stops you

By Erin G. Eggen

Frankfort, KY - As the Commonwealth reopens and traffic continues to increase, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's (KYTC) Office of Highway Safety (KOHS) is reminding drivers to 'Stop Speeding Before it Stops You.'

"Speeding is 100% preventable and obeying the posted speed limit reduces the risk of death or injury for drivers, passengers and other road users," said KYTC Secretary Jim Gray. "Safe driving is one way we can all be a good neighbor on the road."

According to the KOHS, approximately 30 percent of fatal crashes in Kentucky last year involved a speeding and/or aggressive driver.

History Monday: Big News in June 1952

By Mike Watson

There was no lack of news for the week preceding 11 June 1952 and the Adair County News had a jam-packed front page that included:

Public schools generally ran on much different schedules than today, perhaps due to the recent consolidation of city and county schools, as illustrated by the first items below.

The county schools were slated to open their doors on Monday, July 7th, said Superintendent of Adair Schools, Mr. Harbert Walker. The Columbia High and Grade Schools and Jackman High would not open until September 1st.

Superintendent Walker also stated the State had approved the preliminary plans for the new Adair County High School building.

Weldon Hall, Superintendent of the Columbia City Schools since December of 1950, was released from his contract by the Board at his request. He also resigned as principal of the Columbia High School for the coming year, having been employed in that capacity following the merger of the City and County Boards of Education.

Charles Barnes makes big news as a young farming expert:

Letter: Masks should be individual choice

Jessica writes:
Might as well put my opinion in on the matter too, as unpopular as it is. I believe it should be an individual choice. What we're doing now is just prolonging the inevitable that everybody will get it. The thing about saying make them mandatory is there are ppl that can't wear masks, be it for mental or physical health reasons. And to that I hear ppl say, then just stay home if you can't wear one.

That goes both ways to me. If you're that scared that you're going to get it, you stay home. If you're wearing a mask, what does it matter if I'm not? You're protected. Like I said, it should be an individual choice, not mandatory and if you're scared to get it, or sick yourself, stay home.

Letter: Individual choice?

Lisa Carman writes:
It is a choice to wear or not to wear a mask and to shop where we choose. You're breathing the same air regardless. Do you think germs aren't going to infiltrate your mask? If air gets through it, so do germs. Are you not touching it to take it off? Are you using gloves that have first touched every other potentially contaminated surface? I sincerely doubt even the "preachiest of the protectors" follows every safety recommendation to a tee 24/7. I'm tired of the whole situation, as is everyone, but it is still an individual choice.
