Flags to half-staff for Peace Officers Memorial Day

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - In accordance with a proclamation from the White House, Gov. Andy Beshear has directed that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff on Friday, May 15, in observance of Peace Officers Memorial Day.

A joint resolution of Congress, approved October 1, 1962, designated May 15 of each year as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which it falls as Police Week.

Flags at state office buildings are already flying at half-staff in honor of Kentucky's victims of the novel coronavirus disease and will remain so until further direction is provided. Gov. Beshear encourages individuals, businesses and organizations throughout the commonwealth to join in these tributes.

Chief Justice announces cost-cutting measures for Judicial Branch

Adair County Circuit Court Clerk Dennis Loy sends this information about a Court system plan to reduce expenses now in effort to avoid or reduce possible furloughs and layoffs later.

By Leigh Anne Hiatt

Frankfort, KY - With state revenues dropping sharply due to the pandemic, the Judicial Branch is reducing expenses now in an effort to mitigate possible furloughs and layoffs in the coming months.

Chief Justice of Kentucky John D. Minton Jr. announced today that the court system will implement a statewide hiring freeze and suspend all out-of-state travel, effective May 15, 2020. Details about the hiring freeze can be found in this policy. Travel exceptions might be granted if the travel is paid for with federal funds or by an outside agency/association and if social distancing measures will be in place to ensure the health and safety of the court personnel who are traveling.

"Over the last two months, our primary focus has been on modifying court operations in a way that would ensure social distancing while allowing us to provide essential court services," Chief Justice Minton said in an email to the justices, judges, circuit court clerks and court personnel who serve the Judicial Branch. "Now we must turn our attention to the financial impact COVID-19 is having on the economy."

Senses of Yesterday

By Phil Coffey

Sitting in my rocker with my Whistler’s Mother's pose,
turning slightly, I watch the leaves a-waving in the breeze.
No need for formal attire,
just wearing my morning, noon and evening clothes.
Shades of darkness gather,
no traceable sparks of release.

The smell of wood chips on our bended knees,
the sight of fire-stoked broken ax handle glowing for all to see,
hearing my Dad's prayer of 'remove this anguish, Father please'.
Tasting fleeting moments of yesterday,
I leave feeling well pleased.
