First case in Adair: It's hard to take in, but not time to panic

By Gale Cowan
Adair County Judge Executive

I received notification a little after 1pmCT today by the Lake Cumberland District Health Department that Adair County now has its first positive case of the Coronavirus or COVID-19. While this is something that we have been anticipating, it's still hard to take in when you get the call. This is not the time to panic. As I said, this is something we have been expecting.

Myself, along with the Adair County Emergency Management Director Mike Keltner and his team, the Local and District Health Departments, TJ Health Columbia, Adair Co. EMS, Adair County Sheriff, and many more local officials and organizations have been working tireless hours to make sure Adair County residents are kept as safe as possible.

But we can't do it alone.

KSP: Officer Involved Shooting in Cumberland Co.

By Tpr. Nick Hale

Burkesville, KY - The Kentucky State Police is investigating an officer- involved-shooting that occurred in Cumberland County following a pursuit by the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office.

The initial investigation indicates that the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office attempted to stop a silver cobalt at approximately 10amCT, after receiving complaints that it was driving recklessly on KY-61 just south of Burkesville. The driver failed to stop, and led police on a pursuit that travelled onto KY-90, heading east toward Clinton County. The pursuit ended when the driver crashed into a ditch after losing control of his vehicle.

KSP Post 15 Troopers responded to assist the Sheriff's Office with the pursuit, and after arriving at the scene they were confronted in an aggressive manner by the driver who was armed with a knife. As a result of the encounter shots were fired, and the suspect sustained fatal injuries. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Cumberland County Coroner.

Kentucky Color: Country Store Historical Markers and Data Bank

By Billy Joe Fudge

Phillip Coffey, thanks for that most wonderful story concerning the Keltner Community Store and its connection to the Civil War Battle of Shiloh (Keltnertown Stump Negotiations). After beginning my forestry career in 72, I spent quite a bit of time visiting with Ural and others at the store. During the 70's we Rangers were required to make fire prevention and timber management contacts during the winter and summer and country stores were the best places for multiple, productive contacts.

Country stores of the 50s, 60s and 70s were rural contemporaries of the more urban, filling stations. Both were precursors of our modern day gas station/food marts and Dollar General Stores. However, country stores were much more than a gas station and a general store; they were the cultural nerve centers of local, rural communities. They, much like Facebook, were places to garner information, both useful and useless; places to disseminate information, both useful and useless; places to both hone one's storytelling skills and steal, I mean borrow, stories to be retold in locations far removed from the mine from whence they had been dug up.

All of us of a certain age group cherish our memories of our community's country stores. At the same time we all lament their loss and the damage their loss has brought to our local communities. I think before it is too late and even the memories of country stores and their important, critical role in the development of our great nation and its communities are lost, we here in Adair County, the geographic center of the Great Wooded South, should:

Letter: Impressed by visit to Columbia Walmart

By Mary Knight

After holding off as long as I could, I went to Walmart late Saturday afternoon. What a trip!!! The store was busy, but not crowded--customers were very considerate and careful about social distancing. The employees stocking the shelves were working their tails off, but very pleasant about pointing out product locations.

I found everything I needed, with the exception of you-know-what. Checkout was smooth and my cashier, Tammy, was very careful and clever about bagging my order--a large one, after 2 weeks of no grocery shopping.

Thanks to all the Walmart employees--you are doing a great job, under very stressful conditions. And your efforts are most appreciated.

Commentary: During Global Pandemic, Buy Local

By Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Ryan Quarles

Frankfort, KY - Last week, Kentucky farm families celebrated "National Agriculture Week," but as you can imagine, our annual celebration was quieter than usual, given our on-going fight against the global COVID-19 pandemic. As I talked to members of the media and neighbors to promote the celebration, they bombarded me with the following questions: Are we going to run out of food? Is our food supply safe? How can I support local farmers and agribusinesses?

The good news is that America has the safest, most abundant food supply in the world and all evidence suggests that COVID-19 cannot be transmitted via food or livestock, provided you sanitize and prepare food as you would normally.

During this time of national shutdown, individuals and communities ought to support and honor the American farmer even more.

More on COVID-19 patient from Adair Co.

By Stacey Biggs
T.J. Regional Health

Earlier today we were notified that a patient from Adair County, who was treated at T.J. Health Columbia and then admitted at T.J. Samson, has tested positive for COVID-19. The positive test result came back after the patient had been discharged to continue recovering at home. While in the hospital, the patient was treated in the designated COVID-19 unit and was discharged under isolation protocol.

To protect the privacy of the patient and their family, no further information about the patient will be released.

Visitation continues to be highly restricted at both T.J. Health Columbia and at T.J. Samson Community Hospital and the TJ Health Pavilion, with few exceptions. Everyone who enters any of our facilities will continue to be screened upon entry according to CDC guidelines.

"Now more than ever, it's important to please call our hotline before seeking treatment if you or someone you know is concerned about symptoms or exposure," said Neil Thornbury, CEO of T.J. Regional Health. "The hotline is staffed by registered nurses, who can help answer any questions and provide clinical direction. The local hotline number is 270-651-4400."

Governor signed 35 bills last week

Governor Andy Beshear signed dozens of bills last week, expunging acquittals, making Transportation Cabinet sole issuer of driver's licenses

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - In the midst of leading Kentucky's response to a worldwide pandemic that has infected more than 300 Kentuckians, Gov. Andy Beshear signed more than 35 bills last week.

Gov. Beshear signed legislation prohibiting selling tobacco, alternative nicotine and vaping products to people under 21, making the transportation cabinet the sole issuer of driving licenses including REAL IDs, and a bill automatically expunging acquittals. The Governor also vetoed two bills.

"While all of us should be focused on responding to the coronavirus as the number of cases grows in Kentucky, I will continue to evaluate the dozens of bills lawmakers are passing and sign those I believe will benefit the people of the commonwealth," Gov. Beshear said. "While all of these issues could be addressed after we defeat the coronavirus, my staff and I will continue to look out for the best interests of all Kentuckians in deciding which bills should become law."

Gov. Beshear vetoed two bills:

Commentary: Tough Times Call for Working Together

By Congressman James Comer
U.S. Representative, 1st District of Kentucky

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, families, businesses and healthcare providers are facing unprecedented tough times. However, during these trying times I'm encouraged to see the strength exemplified by communities across the nation to support each other and heed warnings. On March 27, 2020, President Trump signed the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act into law, providing significant financial relief for Americans and small businesses, funding to continue to combat the pandemic, and access to care for Americans. While not perfect, this bill is a necessary step forward to safeguard our economy and the well-being of our citizens.

Congress and the Administration have been hard at work to implement solutions for businesses, hospitals and individual Americans. My staff and I have worked to remain accessible throughout this time for my constituents. We recently conducted a tele-townhall so I could hear directly from Kentuckians, and I've held calls with hospital leaders and business owners in the 1st District to better understand the challenges they're facing and assistance they need moving forward.

Keltnertown Stump Negotiations - peace at the country store

Writer Phillip Coffey called to say he thinks we need a bit more in the news than just the virus. While he's cooped up, he is sharing good stories like this one given to him by Columbia's George Keltner.

By Phillip Coffey

George Keltner (GK) who is a native of perhaps the center of all things that matter - near Mell, KY - regaled a story to me about his ancestor with the same name, George Alford Keltner, who fought bravely with General Hobson at Shiloh and other locales. The elder George Keltner was the younger GK's Great Grandfather.

After returning home victoriously with the 13th Ky. Regiment, George the elder built the first Keltner General store. The first store burned and upon being told of the loss he simply moved the store's location about 100 feet or so from the original. There were several different proprietors of Keltner General Store including my Uncle Ural (1944-81) over the 100 plus years of its existence. About July 08,1967 the second store burned after being struck by lightning. Uncle Ural built a third 'Keltner' store which included cement blocks. His son Danny and I carried the blocks for the two masons. (Hod carriers)

Soon after the dust had settled from the U.S Civil War, a decade or two later, a 'Johnny Rebel' come traveling through Keltnertown hellbent on whuping any Union soldier. Surely he had enough of the local illegal White Lightning to 'whip' em all'.

Letter: Millers of Fairplay

Dave Rosenbaum writes:
Thanks CM for printing Mike Watson's piece on grocery prices in 1956. Twenty five pounds of flour for $1.55 at Kroger on the square. For some strange reason I recall that Dad sold two brands of flour at Fairplay. The biggest seller was Sunrise Flour which sold for $1.65 for twenty five pounds. Also sold Robin Hood Flour for $2.10 for the twenty five pound bag.

He sold very little meal because of the grist mill across the road from the store. The millers ground corn all day every Saturday. They charged 10 cents to grind a turn of corn. The millers that I recall were Tom Bennett, Oscar Graves, Lorne Keith and Simpson Wheat. --Dave
