Letter: Mike Watson, descendant of Thomas White

Chris White writes:
I'm trying to contact Mike Watson, one of your writers. We share Thomas White as a common ancestor. He's my third great grandfather. I noticed he wrote they were related in one of his articles. I would like to compare the information I have on ancestry.com with his information.

I'm looking for the parents of Julia Parker White farther on down the line through his husband his second wife William Blackburn Blakemore White. I'm trying to verify the accuracy of this link and Julia Parker's parents. --Chris
Chris, thanks for writing -- we'll forward your contact information to Mike.

Letter: Ed's Feb 1978 newspaper commentary

Robert Cumming writes:
How prophetic Ed's Feb 1978 newspaper commentary words here, but often repeated in small towns across America today: "Things are changing now. No longer can a willful little group of men, who already have their own fortunes made, stop the dreamers, the builders, the doers of the coming generation."

Seems the more things change the more they stay the same! Regards Robert Cumming Jamestown --Robert

February 21, 1978 Around Adair with Ed Waggener

By Ed Waggener

Kentucky's Ace in the hole?
I don't like to go to bed angry, but I did this week when I discovered a $67 fuel adjustment charge on my home electricity bill and after I heard, again that day, that the coal strike is far from over.

I wonder, and you wonder, what we'll do if the coal runs out at the generating plant before the coal strike is over. Will the utility company, in whom we have entrusted all our dependence for electrical power, come up with an alternate source? Or will the plants close up, the lights go off, and our houses turn cold while the utility companies tell us to blame the coal miners?

And to think, we're in this precarious position and we don't even have buried electrical lines!

I'm reminded of the old comic book strip in which everybody was hiring somebody else to do their worrying for them. Of course it didn't work.

Letter: Buffalo in Adair

Joe Barbee writes:
My understanding is that Adair County was was reached by two major routes. First, was from the Cumberland Gap by several routes Southwest to Lincoln County. Reportedly a huge buffalo trace junction existed there. One trace continued South West to the Neatsville Area where there was a ford across the Green River, before continuing Southwest, along what is now KY 206 toward Columbia.

I was told that the Northern Route for settlers and travelers started at the Bakerton and Amandaville Landings above Burkesville on the Cumberland River.

This route was a trace along what is now KY 704. All this wilderness, was then part of Green County. --Joe
