Kentucky Color: A Trained Eye

By Billy Joe Fudge, President
Homeplace on Green River, Inc.

When you're 68 years old and trying to claw your way up an almost vertical dirt hillside with few footholds and handholds, you find yourself searching for the slightest advantage.

Often times that advantage is found in the form of a deer trail. However, during a winter season such as this one which has had no snow to flatten and paste the leaves to the soil beneath, it takes a trained eye to locate them on ultra steep slopes. The leaves are fluffy and are easily moved around by the wind, filling up the narrow, shallow cuts circumventing the slopes.

I've found that the degree of desperation is directly relative to the level of one's training of the senses and in this case desperation was responsible for finding this toe to heel trail (photo).

Gov. Beshear delivers state of the Commonwealth address

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - In his first state of the Commonwealth address on Tuesday, Gov. Andy Beshear said Kentucky's future depends on leaving divisive politics in the past and focusing on providing opportunity for every Kentucky family.

Gov. Beshear said the transformational and positive change Kentucky families count on occurs when we break the cycles of poverty, abuse and addiction, and obtain a good-paying career, affordable health care and a quality education.

"We, in this capital and around Kentucky, are responsible for using the power and privilege of office to do right by Kentuckians, to focus our energy not on partisan squabbles but on working together to figure out how to better the commonwealth we all love so dearly," Gov. Beshear said. "And let me be clear: every moment we focus on partisanship, every moment we focus on national divisions, we fail to address the reality before us."
