SpaceShip Earth free to all at WKU Hardin Planetarium

Hardin Planetarium at Western Kentucky University presents "SpaceShip Earth! Our Place In Space" now through February, free and open to the public.

It's one thing to comprehend the size of the Earth; it is quite another to understand the velocity with which we move through space and the size and distance of everything around us. The public is invited to the Hardin Planetarium for a show encompassing planets, stars, and even our own Milky Way Galaxy in stunning 360-degree fulldome technology.

Each event is free of charge and suitable for all ages. 60 minute running time, with time for questions at the end of the presentation.

Oil well brought in on Lasley farm in Adair County

T & B Drilling, brothers Terry and Billy Withers, and their partners John and Bill Burness have brought in a huge oil well, the second one hit on the Lasley/Graves farm, in the Flatwoods area of Adair County between Columbia and Sparksville, KY.

Cheers reportedly broke out around 4:30pmCT Tuesday, January 7, 2020 when oil shot out of the well. Bobby Withers and others standing by made videos showing the wonder of it all.

In November of last year the first well was brought in on this same property and is producing strongly. The well hit yesterday is projected to do even better.

Patricia Janes, 77, Breeding, KY native (1942-2020)

Patricia Janes, 77, of Louisville, KY died Tuesday, January 7, 2020 at the Rockford Manor Nursing Home in Louisville, KY.

Funeral services will be held at 11amCT on Friday, January 10, 2020, at the Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg St., Columbia, KY, with Bro. Jessie Hagan officiating. Burial will follow in the Chestnut Grove Cemetery.

Visitation will be on Thursday from 4pmCT until 8pmCT at the funeral home.

ACSO: Liberty Road single-vehicle accident

On Wednesday, January 8, 2019, around 3:30amCT, the Adair County Sheriff's Office responded to a single vehicle accident with injury.

A preliminary investigation determined that a 2008 Chrysler was west bound, operated by Nelson Burton, 30, of Columbia. Burton lost control of his vehicle, skidding sideways off the roadway. The vehicle then struck a tree on the driver's side, and then an earth embankment on the passenger side of the vehicle.

The vehicle came to rest upright in a creek. Burton was air lifted from the scene by Air Evac to University of Kentucky Hospital for his injuries.

Deputy Derek Padgett is the investigating officer. He was assisted at the scene by the Adair County Fire Department, Knifley Fire Department, and Adair County EMS.

2020 is the Year of Music in Kentucky

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Department of Tourism today unveiled the 2020 Official Visitor's Guide cover featuring Kentucky native and Nashville recording artist J.D. Shelburne. This issue includes many Kentucky artists highlighting 2020 as the Year of Music in Kentucky.

"Tourism and hospitality create and support thousands of jobs and help to grow our economy across the Commonwealth," said Governor Andy Beshear. "Our new visitor's guide is our invitation to everyone to come to Kentucky and spend time enjoying our breathtaking state and national parks, adventure tourism, culinary and music scenes, the world's best horses and bourbon and so much more. As we grow tourism, we will focus on increasing wages for our Kentucky families working in the industry."

ACSO: Search of Millerfield residence leads to drug arrest

On Tuesday, January 7, 2020, at 6:29pmCT, Adair County Sheriff's Deputy Josh Durbin, along with K-9 Nitro and Deputy Brandon Hitch, were investigating a complaint in the Millerfield community of Adair County.

A search of the residence resulted in deputies locating methamphetamine, cocaine, marijuana, hydrocodone, and drug paraphernalia.

ACJE Cowan says prepare now for coming heavy rains

After all the rain we have had, and expecting another three inches the end of this week, please be aware of your surroundings. Roads are washing out. The pictures with this article represent what is being seen.

A lady called 911 to report a hole in the road in her community and said the hole wasn’t there that morning. That hole held almost two dump truck loads of rock.

Early Morning Accident: Possible delays on 206

1/8/2020, 6:41amCT: Use caution on Liberty Road (HWY 206) due to an accident near the Adair - Casey county line. Difficult conditions related to the location of the vehicle requires removal of the vehicle in daylight. The roadway is open but expect short delays when the vehicle is removed from the scene near the 18200 block of Liberty Road.

Conservation award available for a Kentucky farmer

Frankfort, KY - Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Ryan Quarles is encouraging Kentucky farm families to consider submitting nominations for the Leopold Conservation Award.

Given in honor of renowned conservationist Aldo Leopold, the $10,000 award honors Kentucky farmers and other private landowners who voluntarily demonstrate outstanding stewardship and management of natural resources. The Kentucky Department of Agriculture contributes $3,000 toward the award with money from the Ag Tag Fund, which is funded by voluntary donations from farmers when they buy or renew their farm vehicle license plates.

Nominations must be postmarked by April 1, 2020, and mailed to Leopold Conservation Award, c/o Franklin County Conservation District, 103 Lakeview Court, Frankfort, KY 40601. Electronic nominations and supporting materials are preferred and may be submitted to colemansteve51@gmail.com on or before the deadline.

CPD: Arrest made for DUI and drug possession

On Tuesday afternoon, January 7, 2020, Columbia Police Department officers initiated a traffic stop on HWY 55 North just after 4:30pmCT.

After making contact with the driver, officers could detect the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle as well as the odor of alcoholic beverage from the the operator.

It's currently 37F at the Adair County Mesonet station. It will be sunny today, with a high near 47F and west wind 5 to 9 mph becoming calm in the afternoon.

Tonight will be mostly clear, with a low around 32F and calm wind becoming southeast 5 to 7 mph in the evening.

Thursday will bring increasing clouds, with a high near 58F. South wind 6 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph.

There's a 20 percent chance of rain after midnight on Thursday. Otherwise it will be cloudy, with an overnight low around 49F. South wind 14 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph.
